Little Maker

The Little Maker, called the sandtrout in Fremen folk stories, is the deep-sand vector of the Arrakis sandworm, a creature that is half-plant and half-animal. It is the foundational organism in the planet's ecology, for its excretions form the pre-spice mass that, after a "blow," becomes melange, the geriatric spice on which the entire Imperium depends. The Little Maker is thus the hidden engine of Arrakis's most valuable resource, and its existence explains the circular relationship that sustains the desert planet: little maker to pre-spice mass; little maker to shai-hulud; shai-hulud to scatter the spice upon which feed microscopic creatures called sand plankton; the sand plankton, food for shai-hulud, growing, burrowing, becoming little makers.

Nature and Life Cycle

The Little Maker is a sandswimmer that blocks off water into fertile pockets within the porous lower strata below the 280-degree (absolute) line. This "water-stealer" dies by the millions in each spice-blow, and a five-degree change in temperature can kill it. The few survivors enter a semidormant cyst-hibernation to emerge in six years as small sandworms, about three meters long. Of these, only a few avoid their larger brothers and pre-spice water pockets to emerge into maturity as the giant shai-hulud. Water is poisonous to shai-hulud, as the Fremen had long known from drowning the rare "stunted worm" of the Minor Erg to produce the awareness-spectrum narcotic they call Water of Life. The "stunted worm" is a primitive form of shai-hulud that reaches a length of only about nine meters.

Role in Spice Production

The Little Maker's excretions form the pre-spice mass, a stage of fungusoid wild growth achieved when water is flooded into the excretions of Little Makers. At this stage, the spice of Arrakis forms a characteristic "blow," exchanging the material from deep underground for the matter on the surface above it. This mass, after exposure to sun and air, becomes melange. The pre-spice mass is a critical stage in the spice cycle, and its presence is often detected by the smell of rank, semisweet esters that signal the gasses deep under the sand are nearing explosive pressure. The Little Maker is thus not merely a passive producer but an active agent in the planet's ecology, shaping the very substance that defines Arrakis.

Significance to the Fremen

The Fremen's understanding of the Little Maker is central to their culture and religion. They know that the Little Maker is the source of the spice and the sandworm, and they have learned to exploit its life cycle for their own purposes. The drowning of a maker to produce the Water of Life is the greatest Fremen secret, and it is the Little Maker's primitive form, the stunted worm, that is used for this purpose. The Fremen also recognize the Little Maker's role in the terraforming project, as the sandtrout's water-stealing behavior is a key factor in the planet's hydrology.
