Sardaukar Fanatical

The Sardaukar are the Padishah Emperor's elite soldier-fanatics, the most feared military force in the Imperium. Their ferocity and discipline are forged on the hellish prison planet Salusa Secundus, where they are recruited from the most brutal survivors. In Dune, they are the Emperor's hidden hand, deployed in Harkonnen livery to destroy House Atreides, and their presence on Arrakis ultimately triggers the Fremen jihad that overthrows the Imperium.

Origins and Nature

The Sardaukar are the soldier-fanatics of the Padishah Emperor, men from an environmental background of such ferocity that it killed six out of thirteen persons before the age of eleven. Their military training emphasized ruthlessness and a near-suicidal disregard for personal safety. They were taught from infancy to use cruelty as a standard weapon, weakening opponents with terror. At the apex of their sway over the affairs of the Universe, their swordsmanship was said to match that of the Ginaz tenth level and their cunning abilities at in-fighting were reputed to approach those of a Bene Gesserit adept. Any one of them was rated a match for any ten ordinary Landsraad military conscripts. By the time of Shaddam IV, while they were still formidable, their strength had been sapped by overconfidence, and the sustaining mystique of their warrior religion had been deeply undermined by cynicism.

Role in the Atreides Conspiracy

The Sardaukar are the Emperor's secret weapon in the plot to destroy House Atreides. The Baron Vladimir Harkonnen reveals that the attack on Arrakis will be "strengthened by two legions of Sardaukar disguised in Harkonnen livery." This deception is crucial, as the Emperor cannot be seen to attack a Great House directly. The Duke Leto Atreides correctly deduces this, telling his son Paul, "The Emperor, that means the Sardaukar. Disguised in Harkonnen livery, no doubt. But the soldier fanatics nonetheless." The Sardaukar's presence is a measure of the Emperor's fear of the Duke's growing power, and their overwhelming force is intended to ensure the complete extermination of the Atreides line.

The Sardaukar on Arrakis

On Arrakis, the Sardaukar's brutality is on full display. They are instrumental in the fall of the Atreides, and their tactics are described as both effective and ruthless. They are also shown to be vulnerable. A Fremen band ambushes and wipes out a Sardaukar force, a feat that shocks the Baron. The Fremen, hardened by their own harsh environment, prove to be a match for the Emperor's elite. This is a turning point, as it reveals that the Sardaukar's mystique of invincibility is not absolute. The Sardaukar also engage in a pogrom against the Fremen, but this only serves to unite the desert people against them.

Decline and Defeat

The Sardaukar's overconfidence and cynicism ultimately lead to their downfall. In the final battle for Arrakis, they are overwhelmed by the Fremen, who are now led by Paul-Muad'Dib and equipped with the tactics and weapons he has taught them. The Sardaukar are forced to retreat, and the Emperor is captured. The Sardaukar's defeat is a symbol of the old order's collapse and the rise of a new power. Their fanaticism, once their greatest strength, is shown to be a weakness when faced with an enemy that is equally fierce but more adaptable. The Sardaukar's role in the story is thus a cautionary tale about the dangers of relying on brute force and unquestioning loyalty.
