The 1972 Origin

The First Death
Misaki Yomiyama
Tatsuji Chibiki recalls the popular student Misaki Yomiyama, whose death in a family house fire was denied by his classmates.
The Opened Door
The class treated the dead boy as alive, and a graduation photograph appeared to confirm the impossible. Chibiki identifies this denial as the moment the “Death Gates” opened.
The First Disaster Year

The Casualty Appears
A Class Without One Desk
The following year begins with a missing desk and chair, while deaths spread among students and relatives connected to Class 3.
The Vanishing Extra Person
After graduation, the class discovers that an impossible student had been present. The disappearance leaves behind the core pattern later named the Extra Person or Casualty.
The 1976 Repetition

A Teacher’s Direct Experience
Fourteen Deaths
Tatsuji Chibiki becomes head teacher during another active year. Students and close relatives die through accidents, illness, suicide, and murder.
Escape Into Observation
After discovering that the extra person disappears after graduation, Chibiki leaves teaching. Fear and guilt drive him into the Secondary Library, where he can watch without direct responsibility.
The 1987 Tragedy

Death Beyond the Town
The Bus Collision
A class trip leaves the geographic range of Yomiyama, but a truck crashes into the Class 3 bus near the edge of town. Seven people die.
Policy Aftermath
The school moves future third-year trips earlier and bans comparable off-campus travel. The tragedy proves that escaping the phenomenon’s ordinary range does not make every danger disappear.
The 1996 Breakdown

A Countermeasure That Fractures
Mami Asakura’s Presence
Mami Asakura is inserted into the 1996 class as the casualty, though later records place her death in 1993. The altered reality remains internally consistent.
Human Resistance
The student selected as absent eventually breaks under isolation. Deaths resume, showing that the strategy depends not only on rules but on the endurance of frightened adolescents.
