Sansa Stark's hairnet
A Clash of KingsSansa Stark's hairnet is a fine-spun silver net presented to Sansa Stark by Ser Dontos as part of her planned escape from the Red Keep. Its apparent delicacy and ornamental beauty conceal a darker purpose: Ser Dontos calls it magic, justice for her father, vengeance against those who have wronged her, and the means by which she may reach home.
Design and Materials
The hairnet is made of silver spun so finely that, when Sansa Stark takes it in her fingers, it seems to weigh no more than a breath of air. Small gems are set at every crossing of the strands, creating the appearance of a silvery spiderweb. The stones are black amethysts from Asshai, identified as the rarest kind and described as a deep true purple in daylight. Their darkness gives the ornament a visual quality that is beautiful but withholding: the gems are said to drink the moonlight rather than reflect it.
The Escape Plan
Ser Dontos gives the hairnet to Sansa Stark while confirming that her escape has been arranged for the night of Joffrey Baratheon's wedding. The plan depends on the disorder surrounding the feast: the Red Keep will be crowded with strangers, much of the court will be drunk, and others will be occupied with helping Joffrey Baratheon bed his bride. In that confusion, Sansa Stark is expected to be temporarily forgotten, allowing the escape to proceed.
The timing matters because the wedding is still about a moon's turn away, with Margaery Tyrell still at Highgarden and only newly summoned. The hairnet therefore becomes a physical sign of an arrangement that requires patience. Ser Dontos has already made the necessary preparations, but the object cannot yet fulfill its purpose; it marks an escape deferred rather than an escape completed.
Symbolic Meaning and Hidden Threat
Sansa Stark initially sees the mismatch between the object and her immediate need. She thinks that she needs a ship, not a net for her hair, reducing the beautiful gift to an apparently inadequate ornament. Ser Dontos insists that its significance is greater than its surface suggests, calling it magic and saying that Sansa Stark holds justice, vengeance for her father, and home in her hands.
The hairnet thus operates on two levels. As jewelry, it belongs to the courtly world of display, femininity, and ceremonial dress; as a concealed instrument of escape, it belongs to secrecy and political danger. Its spiderweb form suggests delicacy and entanglement at once, while the black amethysts connect an exquisite object to the remote and ominous reputation of Asshai. The contrast between its light physical weight and its promised burden of justice makes the hairnet a compact emblem of Sansa Stark's precarious position: she appears to possess little power, yet an object placed in her hands may alter her fate.
Narrative Function
The hairnet is a promise carried in material form. Ser Dontos's language transforms it from decoration into a relic of anticipated deliverance, binding Sansa Stark's hope for home to a specific future occasion and to the secrecy of the Red Keep. Its meaning depends not only on what it is made of, but on what Ser Dontos claims it will accomplish. The object therefore concentrates the passage's central tension between appearance and use: something that seems too slight to matter is presented as the instrument of escape, revenge, and return.
