Unsullied

A Feast for Crows

The Unsullied are a company of eunuch infantry commanded by Grey Worm. Their place among Daenerys Targaryen’s military forces identifies them as an organized, specialized body of soldiers, and their appearance in the commanders’ listing gives them a formal role within her emerging power. The evidence does not describe a separate battle involving the company, but it does establish the Unsullied as a named military formation rather than an undifferentiated mass of troops.

Organization and Command

The Unsullied are presented under Grey Worm’s command. He is himself identified as a eunuch, and the company is explicitly characterized as infantry composed of eunuchs. This pairing of commander and formation makes command structure part of the organization’s identity: the Unsullied are not merely associated with Grey Worm, but placed under his direct authority in the enumeration of Daenerys Targaryen’s captains and commanders.

That listing places the Unsullied beside other forces with distinct commanders, including Daario Naharis commanding the Stormcrows and Ben Plumm commanding the Second Sons. The comparison clarifies their institutional character. Whereas those neighboring companies are associated with sellswords and flamboyant or irregular military leadership, the Unsullied are defined by a single collective designation and by the specific military function of eunuch infantry.

Contrast with the Broken Men

The Unsullied’s disciplined military identity gains thematic force beside Septon Meribald’s account of “broken men.” Meribald describes common-born soldiers who leave their homes beneath a lord’s banner with eager expectations of adventure, wealth, and glory. Battle then subjects them to hunger, wounds, ruined clothing, failing footwear, repeated marches, and the deaths of brothers, fathers, sons, and friends. Their original social bonds and sense of home gradually disappear until they fight beside strangers beneath a banner they scarcely recognize.

Meribald’s account culminates in psychological and moral disintegration. A soldier may turn and run, crawl over corpses, or hide in darkness; once home, kings, lords, and gods have become less important than spoiled meat or bad wine that can sustain him or dull his fear. The broken man survives from meal to meal, “more beast than man.” The Unsullied are not described as undergoing this transformation, but their formal status as a company of eunuch infantry provides a deliberate counter-image to it: they appear as a named, commanded military body in contrast to soldiers whose organization, loyalties, and humanity have been eroded by war.

Military and Narrative Significance

The evidence assigns the Unsullied a place within a broader network of commanders serving Daenerys Targaryen. Their inclusion confirms that her power depends on several distinct military constituencies rather than on a single homogeneous army. Grey Worm’s command also gives the company a recognizable representative, allowing the formation to function within the political and military structure surrounding Daenerys.

At the same time, the Unsullied’s sparse description leaves their significance largely structural in this passage. They are named, classified, and positioned in the command roster, while Meribald’s speech supplies the surrounding moral vocabulary of warfare: enlistment, battle, deprivation, bereavement, identity loss, and the making of dangerous survivors. Against that account, the Unsullied represent military order as an institution, while the broken men represent what prolonged warfare can do when ordinary people are consumed by it. The contrast does not erase the violence underlying military organization; instead, it makes the difference between a recognized force and a ruined individual central to how war is imagined.
