Hamburg Departure

Hamburg Departure
Resolve becomes action
Professor Hardwigg arranges equipment, provisions, letters, and transport with extraordinary speed. Henry’s doubts persist, but Gretchen’s enthusiasm makes the adventure feel less like an eccentric plan and more like a family undertaking.
They leave Hamburg before dawn, carrying scientific instruments alongside ropes, weapons, food, and the confidence that preparation can master the unknown.
A destination fixed
The decoded directions point toward Iceland, Sneffels, and the shadow of Scartaris. The destination is not yet the earth’s center itself in practical terms; first they must locate the entrance that Saknussemm described.
The scale of the plan grows out of a small scrap of writing and one determined reader.
Across Iceland

Across Iceland
A difficult approach
The travelers cross barren terrain, boggy ground, lava fields, and fjords on the way to the peninsula. Hans Bjelke’s steady practical judgment repeatedly outmatches Professor Hardwigg’s impatience with delays.
Henry’s anxieties ease during the ride but return as the volcanic landscape draws closer. The familiar world of roads and comfortable lodging gives way to a country where progress depends on local knowledge and endurance.
At the mountain’s foot
At Stapi, the party completes preparations for the ascent and secures additional carriers. The Rector’s poor hospitality makes the settlement a temporary staging point rather than a place of refuge.
The route has brought the three central travelers to Sneffels, where the physical test of the journey begins.
Below the Crater

Below the Crater
The descent begins
The travelers enter Sneffels’s central shaft by lowering themselves with ropes and carrying essential equipment. The darkness, unstable rock, and great depth make the descent a test of bodily skill as much as scientific ambition.
At the shaft’s bottom, they find branching passages instead of a direct continuation. Professor Hardwigg chooses the eastern route, though the landscape offers no reliable sign that it is correct.
A wrong direction
The Eastern Tunnel leads away from the volcanic passage and eventually becomes an unproductive dead end. The choice costs the group days of effort and consumes the water they need to survive.
Their progress below the crater is not a simple descent toward a goal; it is a sequence of uncertain decisions with irreversible consequences.
Sea Beneath the Earth

Sea Beneath the Earth
A new landscape
The travelers emerge from underground passages beside a vast subterranean sea. The discovery gives Henry a view of a world whose scale and ecology exceed the geological expectations he had brought underground.
The party rests, studies the surroundings, and constructs a raft from fossil wood. Their route changes from arduous walking through rock to navigation across open water.
A passage of wonders
They travel across a sea containing blind fossil fish, immense vegetation, and prehistoric creatures. The crossing brings scientific discoveries but also storms, combat, and navigational uncertainty.
The sea expands the expedition’s horizon even as it makes the route longer and more vulnerable to forces the travelers cannot control.
An Accidental Exit

An Accidental Exit
The route turns upward
A blast intended to clear a blocked passage releases water into an underground channel. The raft is swept along the torrent, carrying the travelers away from their planned descent and into a rising volcanic conduit.
Heat, eruptive debris, and violent upward motion replace the expedition’s carefully measured progress. The group survives not by finding a planned return route but by being carried toward an opening.
Sicily and home
The travelers emerge on Stromboli, where a local child identifies the island. After recovering and traveling onward, they return to Hamburg in October.
Their journey has not reached the center, but the unexpected exit completes a passage across the earth’s hidden spaces and brings them back to the lives they left.
