Emma (impersonating Julia Simmons)—Patrick Simmons

A Murder Is Announced

The relationship between Emma (impersonating Julia Simmons) and Patrick Simmons is built on a false identity and a shared scheme: Patrick introduces Emma as his sister and as a cousin of Miss Blacklock, while Emma explains that the deception was intended to bring her within reach of Miss Blacklock’s prospective inheritance. Patrick falls for Emma and helps her present herself as Julia; after the hold-up, their alliance becomes a liability, as Emma fears that her financial motive will make the police suspect her.

The Acquaintance and the Invention of Julia

Emma says she met Patrick at a cocktail party soon after he was demobilized. He told her he was going to stay at Little Paddocks, and the pair decided it would be a lark for her to come with him under the name Julia Simmons. In that arrangement, their first bond is conspiratorial: Patrick supplies the family connection that gives Emma a place in the household, and Emma accepts a role that conceals her own identity.

The deception also depends on the real Julia’s absence. Emma says Julia wanted to pursue acting, and had obtained an opportunity with a repertory company in Perth, while their mother disapproved of the stage. Julia had allowed her mother to believe she was staying with Patrick and training as a dispenser. Emma persuaded Julia to go to Perth, making it possible to occupy the identity Patrick had proposed without the real Julia being present to contradict it.

Attraction and the Inheritance Motive

Emma describes Patrick as falling for her, and says she deliberately pursued him after realizing that he was related to Miss Blacklock. She had been investigating the family circumstances: her wealthy maternal uncle had died, but his will left her nothing directly; his widow, Miss Blacklock, appeared to Emma to be the more promising person to approach. Emma hoped that cultivating a friendly relationship might lead Miss Blacklock to take a liking to her and provide an allowance. Patrick’s presence turned that possibility into an opportunity for entry into the household.

Their relationship consequently combines attraction with calculation, without reducing either part to a complete explanation of the other. Emma says Patrick’s affection was gratifying, but also presents his connection to Miss Blacklock as the chance that made her plan work. She frames the deception as a lark at first, while acknowledging that its material purpose was to gain access to a woman she believed might help her financially.

A Shared Lie Under Pressure

Patrick does more than bring Emma to the house: he supports the identity she has adopted and continues to help sustain it. Emma says he felt sorry for her as someone alone in the world and thought it would be a good idea for her to come as his sister. When Miss Blacklock directly asks who the young woman brought there as Julia is, Patrick begins an explanation, but Emma herself identifies her real name as Emma Jocelyn Stamfordis and describes herself as one half of the Pip-and-Emma pair.

The staged hold-up changes the stakes of their arrangement. Emma admits that after it happened she saw herself as in a dangerous position: because she had a plausible motive for wanting Miss Blacklock out of the way, she feared that she could not simply tell the police who she was without appearing to incriminate herself. She says that even Patrick sometimes grew suspicious of her, and that she expected a sceptical police inspector to be more so. Her chosen response was to remain in the assumed identity and wait for the term to end, rather than disclose the deception.

The Real Julia’s Return and the Fracture of the Plan

The plan was threatened when the real Julia abandoned her acting opportunity after a quarrel with the producer and wrote to Patrick asking to come to Little Paddocks. Emma is angry that Patrick failed to send Julia a warning to stay away. His inaction puts the imposture at risk: the identity that had enabled their joint entry into the household could no longer safely be maintained if the actual Julia arrived.

The relationship is thus revealed as an alliance with unequal vulnerabilities. Patrick’s feelings and willingness to help had made Emma’s scheme possible, but the later lie to the police and the danger of exposure leave Emma watching for suspicion even from him. The disclosure clarifies the double character of their connection: they are presented within the household as siblings, while Emma describes Patrick as a romantic interest and accomplice in her attempt to secure Miss Blacklock’s favor. Their shared deception, rather than any settled future together, is the relationship’s decisive plot consequence.
