Miss Murgatroyd’s cottage

Miss Murgatroyd’s cottage becomes a pivotal listening post in the investigation: outside its open window, Charlotte Blacklock overhears Miss Murgatroyd nearing the truth about what happened during the staged shooting. The brief exchange makes the cottage the setting where a remembered observation becomes a threat—and helps explain why Miss Murgatroyd is killed.

Setting and overheard conversation

As Miss Hinchcliffe urges her friend to remember what she saw, Charlotte listens from outside the cottage’s open window. Until then, Charlotte has assumed that everyone would have been watching Rudi Scherz, and has not realized that another person might have seen something capable of endangering her.

The conversation changes when Miss Murgatroyd reaches the point of calling after Miss Hinchcliffe, “She wasn’t there…” The statement indicates that her recollection has approached the truth Charlotte needs to keep hidden. Miss Marple reconstructs Charlotte’s presence at the window and her alarm as she listens, explaining how the exchange makes the cottage a place of discovery as well as conversation.

Clue and consequence

The wording itself matters to Miss Marple’s interpretation. She asks Miss Hinchcliffe how she said the phrase: if it had been delivered differently, it would not have meant the same thing. The distinction is subtle enough that Inspector Craddock says he does not follow it, but it allows Miss Marple to connect Miss Murgatroyd’s words to Charlotte’s fear that her secret has been seen through.

In Miss Marple’s account, Charlotte hears the conversation just as Miss Hinchcliffe rushes off to the station. Miss Murgatroyd’s recollection identifies her as a potential danger to Charlotte, and the cottage episode helps explain the cause of her subsequent murder. Miss Marple frames Charlotte as a weak, kindly-seeming murderer whose fear can turn savage and leave her without self-control; the cottage is therefore central to the chain from overheard clue to lethal silencing.
