An Unaged Soldier

A Life Without a Known Beginning
A man without childhood
Carter says that he has never aged like other men and cannot remember being a child. He appears to remain around thirty, although he believes himself to be very old.
Mortality remains
His unusual condition does not remove his fear of death. The story begins with a paradox: a man who has died in a sense still expects a final, irreversible ending.
A Soldier Without a Country

Searching for a New Purpose
Displaced after war
Carter emerges from the American Civil War with a military identity but no army or clear livelihood. He turns toward prospecting in the American Southwest, seeking a future outside the vanished cause he served.
Friendship and loss
His partnership with James K. Powell brings success in the Arizona mountains, then ends in violence. Carter’s attempt to save Powell leads him to the cave and changes the direction of his life.
A Body Remade by Mars

Strength in a Strange World
Physical adjustment
On Barsoom, Carter’s Earth-conditioned muscles propel him far beyond the ground under the planet’s lower gravity. At first the advantage is difficult to control, but practice turns it into a decisive survival skill.
A new reputation
The Tharks interpret his leaps as proof of exceptional power. Carter begins to gain status in a world where physical ability determines whether a stranger is merely prey or a potential champion.
A Prince Through Service

A Chosen Allegiance
From captive to scout
After the arena, Carter reaches Zodanga and enters its military as an air scout under disguise. His actions protect a royal relative and win him a post close to the ruler.
Loyalty redirects power
He uses access to help Kantos Kan search for Dejah Thoris and later joins the Tharks in the campaign against Zodanga. His standing comes less from birth than from service and risk.
Earthbound Again

Return Without Closure
A sudden homecoming
After opening the Atmosphere Plant, Carter wakes in the Arizona cave. The decayed clothing on his body suggests that his Earth body and his journey across worlds have been connected in ways he cannot explain.
An unfinished life
He has wealth and a home near the Hudson, but remains emotionally fixed on Barsoom. His final image of Dejah Thoris and a child is an act of hope, not confirmed knowledge.
