Memorial Day

Accident

Memorial Day is a chronological marker and a gathering point in the aftermath of the crash: Trygve Thorensen organizes a barbecue to welcome Chloe Thorensen home from the hospital, but the occasion’s warmth is shadowed by absence, exhaustion, and the changes the crisis has brought to everyone around them.

Chronological Setting

The barbecue takes place the day after Page Clarke and Andy Clarke spend a quiet evening at home following their visit to Chloe. Chloe’s return is not a sudden restoration of her former freedom; her recovery is expected to be slow, and Trygve knows that the limits of her daily life will be difficult for her. Against that unsettled background, Memorial Day provides a reason to gather without suggesting that life has returned to normal.

The Barbecue

Trygve invites four or five of Chloe’s friends, including Jamie Applegate, as well as Page and Andy. The young guests are glad to have Chloe back, and Page observes their happiness while wishing that Allyson could be there too. Chloe’s company is therefore bittersweet for Page: the welcome-home gathering makes one daughter’s return visible while reminding her of the daughter still absent.

Trygve sits with Page wearing an apron and holding a glass of wine. He looks tired because he has been awake repeatedly during the night with Chloe. His fatigue makes the gathering an extension of his ongoing care rather than a carefree holiday occasion; Chloe is home, but her needs continue to shape the household.

Conversation and Aftermath

Speaking with Page, Trygve reflects that the experience has changed everyone it touched, especially Phillip Chapman and Allyson. He then asks how Page is doing. She has been separated from Brad Clarke for two weeks, and the separation has been harder than she expected. Trygve has seen less of her during that time and has missed her, but he has deliberately given her room to adjust after Brad left. Page recognizes that consideration and is grateful for it, even as she has missed the warmth of their friendship and flirtation.

The day’s welcome and its private conversation hold recovery and grief together rather than resolving either. Chloe is back among her friends, but still faces a long period of healing; Allyson’s absence remains keenly felt; and Page and Trygve’s renewed closeness emerges through his patient attention to her needs. Memorial Day thus frames a brief gathering as a measure of how much has changed, and of the relationships continuing to sustain those affected.
