Cotiaeum

Aesop's Fables

Cotiaeum is one of four places that claimed to be the birthplace of Aesop. Its claim remains unresolved: the account acknowledges Cotiaeum’s standing among the candidates but says the honor cannot be assigned definitively to any one of them.

Identity and Setting

Cotiaeum is identified as the chief city of a province of Phrygia. The account gives this geographical description while presenting it as one of several locations associated with Aesop’s origins.

Connection to Aesop

Alongside Sardis, Samos, and Mesembria, Cotiaeum contended for the distinction of being Aesop’s birthplace. The list places the city within a broader set of competing traditions rather than establishing a settled biographical fact.

Unresolved Claim

The account distinguishes the uncertain birthplace traditions from biographical details it presents as generally accepted by scholars. Although it reports that Aesop was born about 620 B.C. and was a slave by birth, it does not identify Cotiaeum—or any of the other claimants—as his birthplace. Cotiaeum’s significance here is therefore as a documented but unconfirmed candidate.
