Mesembria
Aesop's FablesMesembria is one of four cities named as a possible birthplace of Aesop in the account of his life, but its claim remains unresolved: the text says the honor cannot be assigned definitively to any one of the contenders.
The Birthplace Claim
Mesembria is described as an ancient colony in Thrace. It appears alongside Sardis, Samos, and Cotiaeum in a list of places that contend for the distinction of having been Aesop’s birthplace. The list records competing traditions rather than establishing a definitive location.
Place in Aesop’s Biography
The account distinguishes this uncertainty from the biographical details it presents as generally accepted: Aesop was born about 620 B.C. and was enslaved from birth. Mesembria’s status is therefore limited but significant within the biography: it preserves one of several claims about his origins, while the evidence offered does not settle the question.
