Go to San Diego to investigate Tim Levine

Always

The journey to San Diego to investigate Tim Levine is the turning point in the search for Paige: a psychic impression, phone records, and a carefully watched approach to Levine eventually expose that Paige is alive and has been hiding from Emma. The answer is not the rescue from an abduction Emma fears, but a family betrayal: Paige fled because she had slept with Emma’s husband, Barrett, and could no longer face her guilt. The investigation closes one mystery only by opening a more intimate wound.

The Search Turns Toward San Diego

Emma cannot afford to resume the private investigation she hired during the first week after Paige disappeared. Barrett died without life insurance, and although Emma’s business has kept the household going, insurance costs and the mortgage leave little money each month. Linc tells her that the search need not depend on paying an investigator: his friends Gillian and Jake work with a missing-persons foundation, supported by donations from people they have helped. Jake, a former police officer who became a private investigator, brings a different skill set from Gillian’s psychic ability.

Gillian’s inquiries narrow the field without resolving it. She speaks with Craig Jamison, whom she believes was truthful when he said that he and Paige had broken up because school projects left too little time together; Gillian does not think their relationship went beyond friendship. She also contacts the detective assigned to Paige’s case and learns that police examined whether Barrett’s death, only a year earlier, could be connected to the disappearance. They found no connection, though Gillian’s impression is that the detective is withholding something. Looking at Paige’s picture and necklace, Gillian feels strongly that San Diego matters. Emma cannot recall Paige mentioning any connection to the city.

The search combines intuitive impressions with conventional inquiry. Jake notes that Paige’s phone use stopped on the day she disappeared and says he has found nothing unusual in the records, which he assumes the detective also checked. He wants to interview some of Paige’s friends, and Emma offers to contact them. Meanwhile, Paige’s daily use of the Branches social-networking site gives the investigators another line of inquiry: her activity there appears to favor private clubs, which helps Gillian form a plan to find Levine alone. When Jake reports that he and Gillian will fly to San Diego, he asks Emma whether she wants to go with them.

Watching Levine’s House

The next day, Linc and Emma wait in a car on a residential street while Gillian and Jake approach the stone-and-stucco home Tim Levine rents. The neighborhood, not far from the college area, is older but well kept; bougainvillea climbs by the carport, and a palm partly blocks the view of the porch. Linc’s familiarity with local hotels has helped the group settle in, but for Emma the drive has done little to quiet the uncertainty. On the plane she had seemed withdrawn, absorbed in thoughts about her sister; Linc understands that she cannot return to ordinary life without learning what happened.

From their curbside vantage point, Emma and Linc watch Gillian and Jake reach the door. Emma’s voice tightens with anxiety and excitement when she sees Levine open it. He is tall and slim, wears horn-rimmed glasses, and initially tries to close the door while shaking his head. Jake holds it open. Gillian touches Jake’s elbow, then offers Levine something that falls to the ground; when Levine stoops to retrieve it, Gillian taps it. The exchange is an attempt to make the physical contact she needs for her impressions.

The approach yields little at first. Jake backs off, Gillian shakes Levine’s hand, and the two investigators turn away and return to the SUV. Linc has arranged for a rental vehicle with darkly tinted windows, so Levine has not seen him or Emma. As Jake and Gillian climb into the back, Jake says there is not much to report. Linc assumes Levine will watch from the window until they leave and drives them away, keeping open the possibility of a Plan B.

A Lead, Not Yet an Answer

Back at the house where the group is staying, the others gather around Gillian rather than the comfortable living room or the drinks Linc brings from the refrigerator. Emma gives Gillian permission to speak even if what she has to say is uncertain; she needs to know something. Gillian says she believes Paige is alive. Her next impression is that she could see Paige’s name all around Tim Levine.

That apparent connection does not amount to a clear explanation. Gillian says she is receiving strange signals from both Paige’s jewelry and Levine, and that they feel like a secret. She cannot tell whether Paige is in contact with him, whether someone holding Paige is in contact with him, or whether Levine knows where Paige is at all. The distinction matters: Emma’s fear of a captor remains possible, but Gillian has no certainty to confirm it. Jake points out that there has been no ransom note or demand for money, leaving open both the possibility that Paige is being held and the possibility that she ran away to leave her life behind.

The team decides that another direct approach may be more useful than waiting at the house. Gillian wants Jake to tail Levine that night. His Branches posts suggest that he goes to private clubs, and Gillian hopes to find him out alone, where she can approach him. The plan moves the search from a vague psychic lead to active surveillance, although its justification still rests partly on uncertain impressions. Linc’s own role is to act when the opportunity comes; Emma’s is to endure a trail that offers hope without yet explaining why her sister vanished.

The Secret Behind the Disappearance

At a later confrontation, Linc presses Levine for a complete account of how he knows Paige. He is physically stronger, blocks Levine from leaving, and takes the phone Levine reaches for. Levine first claims he knows nothing, then explains that a detective from Los Angeles questioned him and that he denied having information. Linc makes clear that he is continuing the inquiry because Emma needs answers. Under that pressure, Levine admits that he warned Paige she was making the wrong decisions and that hiding would not solve anything. Paige, he says, could no longer keep facing Emma.

Levine’s account identifies a way to find Paige: she is renting a studio apartment near the college under a sublease that does not put her name on records. He believes that if Emma and the others are there when Paige returns the following morning, she will stop running. Emma cannot accept waiting without knowing why Paige left. Linc tells her the truth directly: Paige ran away because she had slept with Barrett and could no longer bear her guilt. Emma’s face loses its color; when Linc reaches for her, she evades his embrace. The revelation answers where the search is leading, but destroys the comfort that an uncomplicated reunion might have promised.

Paige’s later explanation fills in the circumstances. After their mother died, Emma was the center of Paige’s family life. Paige had worried about being in the way after Emma married Barrett, but the household seemed to work: Barrett was often absent, and Paige and Emma still shared a home. Paige loved playing with Becky and babysitting her. Then Paige turned eighteen, and she began to notice Barrett watching her differently. During Thanksgiving break, when Emma worked late and Maris watched Becky, Paige put Becky to bed and then ate with Barrett. Their easy conversation about sports and music acquired a tension Paige did not understand. Barrett complained that Becky had come between him and Emma and that everything had changed after the baby’s birth.

The affair began on the Friday after Thanksgiving, Emma’s busiest and longest workday of the year. Barrett came home early with two bottles of wine and dinner he had picked up, saying Emma need not worry about cooking. After Becky was asleep, he and Paige ate in the living room and watched a DVD. He continued pouring wine; Paige later recognized that she should have stopped drinking, but at the time his attention made her feel grown-up and appreciated. He kissed her, and the encounter escalated quickly. Paige says Barrett described it as their secret, and that she did not say no.

Emma’s understanding of the past changes as Paige speaks. Paige had been introverted, had dated little in high school after their mother’s death, and had little time for a social life once college design projects began. Emma now reconsiders Barrett’s withdrawal from meaningful conversation, late nights, and jealousy of the baby. She recognizes his resentment and the imbalance in the encounter: he took advantage of the person Emma loved most after Becky. Paige’s guilt had driven the disappearance, but Emma sees Barrett’s conduct as exploitation shaped by his dissatisfaction with his marriage, not simply as a mutual betrayal between sisters.

Reunion and Consequence

The discovery transforms the meaning of the San Diego lead. At first, the city appears as an unexplained point in Gillian’s impressions; Levine’s guardedness makes it look like a possible link to a captive Paige. The eventual answer is different: he knows Paige’s hiding place, but the evidence does not establish that he knows her precise location or that he is holding her. The investigation moves from suspicion about an external threat to the concealed history of Emma’s household.

When Emma and Paige face what happened, Paige lowers her head and struggles to explain how the family she loved became the source of her shame. Emma listens, recognizes the circumstances she had not understood, and finally leans forward to embrace her sister. They cry for what has been lost—the marriage, Paige’s innocence, and the ease of a bond that had seemed permanent. Their embrace is not a declaration that nothing has changed; Emma acknowledges that their relationship may never again be the same. The search therefore ends its immediate uncertainty with a reunion, while leaving reconciliation as a painful process rather than a consequence guaranteed by finding Paige.
