New York City

Animals

New York City enters the story as both a destination and an image of distance. Jim is there to perform a piano recital on a barge in Brooklyn while Laura remains in Manchester, where the night’s disorder and the next day’s exhaustion make the separation between them feel personal as well as geographical.

A City Across the Phone Line

The recital places Jim in New York City during one of Laura and Tyler’s nights out. The previous night, Jim had called before his soundcheck and urged Laura to be careful, knowing how the night could gather momentum when she and Tyler encouraged each other. Laura was outside a bar on Oxford Road; Tyler was inside transferring a dealer’s number from her dying phone onto her forearm with lip-liner. The phone call connects the two places, but Jim’s absence leaves Laura and Tyler to make their own choices, with the familiar aftermath of a ransacked purse and a wasted day following.

Imagined Distance

Afterward, Laura tries to picture New York City by imagining the view of Earth from low orbit and descending through map scales toward Jim’s hotel room. The mental journey ends not in a sense of closeness but in a memory of Jim leaving for the airport: his slick, side-parted hair, described as Bart-Simpson church hair, and his white shirt beneath a diamond-pattern tank top. Instead of bridging the distance, the image adds miles between them. New York City thus becomes a place Laura can approach through imagination and the phone, yet not a place that dispels their separation.

Jim’s Description of the City

When Laura asks Jim to tell her about New York, he describes it as lively and contradictory: seemingly organised on the surface, but beautifully chaotic underneath. He presents the city through qualities Laura would love, making it not simply the setting for his recital but a place whose contrasts echo the disorder and attraction of the night she has just lived through. The description remains Jim’s account, offered across the distance separating them.
