Desire's Object

Desire's Object
Beyond Appetite
Desire cannot be reduced to a wish for pleasure or the ending of discomfort. It reaches toward another person as an object in the world.
Organic Totality
The desired body is apprehended as a living whole in situation, not as an assemblage of isolated physiological parts.
Desire Makes Itself Body

Desire Makes Itself Body
Facticity
Desire lets consciousness experience its own body as a heavy, troubling presence rather than merely as an instrument of action.
Ambivalence
The desiring person seeks to be flesh while still pursuing a future state. Desire both surrenders to the body and exceeds it.
The World of Desire

The World of Desire
Altered Perception
The world changes with desire. Objects are experienced through warmth, texture, resistance, and proximity rather than only through practical use.
Relation to the Other
This sensual world is not merely solitary. It calls for another body whose freedom is encountered through embodied presence.
The Body as Flesh

The Body as Flesh
Double Incarnation
The desiring person attempts to appear as flesh in order to awaken the Other to their own flesh. The project seeks reciprocal embodiment.
Impossible Possession
The Other's freedom remains beyond grasp even when the body is physically present. Desire tries to make that freedom appear within facticity.
Desire's Circular Failure

Desire's Circular Failure
Appropriation Breaks Reciprocity
Taking the Other as an object interrupts the caress's reciprocal movement. Desire turns toward possession and reopens the conflict it sought to soften.
Reversal
Pleasure, desire, and the attempt to grasp freedom repeatedly displace one another without producing a stable union.
