Presence

Being and Nothingness

Presence is the For-itself’s relation to Being-in-itself and, through that relation, to the rest of Being. It is not simple proximity or passive awareness: presence involves an internal negation by which consciousness relates to being while remaining distinct from it, and makes Being-in-itself exist as a totality. Its apparent present is therefore inseparable from movement beyond itself, toward the Future as a further project.

Relation to Being

Presence is defined as an internal relation between the being that is present and the being to which it is present. The relation does not collapse the For-itself into Being-in-itself; its inward negation both connects consciousness to being and marks their difference. By being present to all of Being-in-itself, the For-itself makes it exist as a totality: being is encountered not as an isolated collection but as a world gathered in relation to consciousness.

Presence and the Present

Presence should not be confused with a self-contained present moment. The Present is not: the For-itself is present to Being-in-itself through internal negation, rather than existing as a fixed point within time. What seems to be its present is already an activity of relating, a presence that cannot settle into simple identity with what is.

Flight Toward the Future

The same presence that relates the For-itself to Being-in-itself is a flight toward the Future. This movement is not an escape from the relation to being but its temporal continuation: the For-itself projects itself toward a further possibility and is not exhausted by what it currently is. Presence thus holds together contact with the world and a directedness beyond the given, linking consciousness’s relation to being with its ongoing project.
