Space
Being and NothingnessSpace names the shifting exteriority through which the For-itself encounters a world of independent beings; it is neither a substance nor a form laid over them. The world can appear as a synthetic whole and as a collection of separate particulars because the For-itself relates what, in themselves, remains unrelated. Space is this unstable passage between continuity and multiplicity: a relation brought into the world without altering the beings it relates.
Definition and Structure
Space is not a being alongside the things that occupy it. It is the relation in which beings appear as having no relation to one another: the independence of each in-itself disclosed in relation to the others. The For-itself, present to the whole and to each particular, is the being through which this exteriority becomes manifest. Space therefore belongs neither to the ground nor to the figure; it is the ground’s ideal possibility of breaking apart into figures, and the ongoing passage from continuous background to discontinuous particulars.
This passage explains why space cannot be reduced to a completed synthesis. The world appears as a totality, yet that totality can always disintegrate into a multiplicity of distinct “thises.” Space is at once totality, insofar as it derives from the world, and nothing, insofar as it yields the proliferation of particulars. It cannot be grasped as a concrete object because it is not a thing; it is continually spatialized as relations become manifest.
The For-itself and Spatialization
Space comes into the world through the For-itself’s activity. The For-itself does not add a spatial property to an object; its spatial characteristic is the object’s “place,” its exterior relation to the ground and, as the ground differentiates, to other particulars. By making beings appear as “there,” consciousness adds nothing to their being. Spatiality indicates instead that negation can relate beings while leaving them intact.
The For-itself spatializes by apprehending itself as not being in-itself, while the in-itself is disclosed to it in the mode of extension. Their relation is not a juxtaposition or an indifferent exteriority: it is an internal negation. That relation is the foundation of relations, while the in-itselfs remain in indifferent exteriority toward one another. Space, then, is not itself the For-itself; it is the way the For-itself’s ekstatic relation to being lets exteriority appear.
Temporality and Ends
Spatiality depends on temporality. It appears through a being whose mode of being is temporalization, as the For-itself loses itself ekstatically in order to realize being. Space is thus not a fixed framework standing apart from lived activity. It is the changing way a temporal being organizes a world of external relations.
The account also characterizes space as primarily subjective: the For-itself organizes relations between external objects in light of its own ends. This does not make space an arbitrary private invention. Rather, spatial relations become intelligible through the being that relates to the world and acts within it; they are neither additional properties inside the things nor an independent substance between them.
Geometry and Philosophical Significance
Treating exteriority as though it were a substance existing in and through itself is possible only at a lower stage of knowledge. Under that abstraction, exteriority becomes an object of geometry and a specification of the abstract theory of multiplicities. The philosophical account does not deny such study; it distinguishes it from the lived emergence of spatial relations that geometry takes as its object.
Space therefore challenges the conception of spatiality as a form imposed on phenomena by an a priori structure of sensibility. It is not a container or an added feature of things, but the ideality and instability of the world as the For-itself relates its particulars. Its apparent neutrality conceals a relation grounded in subjective activity: space is the nothingness of relation apprehended as a relation, and the world’s exterior multiplicity disclosed through the For-itself’s own projects.
