Disaster Arrives An unprecedented flood Rising water inundates parts of Cedar Rapids, filling basements and threatening public buildings and businesses. Pandora and Edison are living at Prague Porches, where their apartment remains above the floodwater. A practical response They volunteer after securing their own belongings. The disaster gives them a common task that is larger than the diet, their family conflict, or Edison’s former career disappointments.

Useful Work A new measure of strength Edison joins the lines of volunteers, filling and carrying sandbags despite the physical limits he still faces. He recognizes that his former size would have made this work impossible. Shared effort The work is tiring, repetitive, and largely uncelebrated. Unlike a performance or a diet milestone, it gives Edison a direct way to help other people without having to claim exceptional status.

Stories of Displacement Possessions disappear People displaced from flooded neighborhoods grieve furniture, family quilts, and uninsured homes. Edison recognizes in their loss something familiar from his own experience of losing nearly all his possessions. A different account of loss He tells volunteers that losing objects can make a person lighter and less bound to an old identity. The observation transforms his private hardship into a form of comfort for people facing their own upheaval.

Food in a New Context A difficult decision The volunteers receive pizza after exhausting days of labor. Pandora tells Edison he may eat, recognizing that his work has used substantial energy and that the food is part of a communal effort. A changed experience Edison later calls it the best pizza he has eaten, unlike the secret binge that broke his earlier agreement. Permission, effort, company, and restraint give the meal a different meaning from compulsive isolation.

An Incomplete Victory Work ends before the flood The Red Cross and National Guard tell volunteers that their work is finished, even as the river continues rising. Later coverage shows that much of the sandbagging did not prevent the damage. Belonging remains Edison and Pandora are disappointed to leave the effort, which had made them feel useful and connected. Its practical limits do not erase the value of the relationships and purpose they found while working.
