M60 motorway

Blow Out

The M60 motorway is the setting for the final pursuit of Darren Clements and his fatal collision with traffic. Its pedestrian route, rising slip road, hard shoulder, and live lanes turn the chase into a sudden catastrophe: Jo reaches the motorway only yards behind him, but cannot prevent him from running into the road and being struck.## The pursuit reaches the motorway After crossing the perimeter road and passing through a gap in the fence, Clements follows a pedestrian and cycle pathway towards the Redclyffe Circle roundabout. A drone operator tracks his direction and reports that he is turning left towards the M60 motorway, while Jo runs after him. The pursuit is both closely monitored and physically immediate: the control team can follow his movement, but Jo must make up the distance on foot.## The collision Jo gains ground as Clements runs up the ascending slip road. Near the summit, he passes a yellow sign depicting a tow truck and reading “FREE RECOVERY, AWAIT RESCUE.” Five yards behind him, Jo sees him turn right and cross the hard shoulder into the slow lane. She shouts for him to stop and warns that he is being stupid. Halfway into the second lane, Clements turns to look back at her.## Death and aftermath The first car coming down the slope swerves into the fast lane, and another vehicle crashes into the central barrier. A second car has no time to react: it strikes Clements head-on, throws him onto its windshield and over its roof, and sends him into the path of a diesel tanker. The collision is watched on the control-room screens; the drone operator reports that Clements is down. Jo closes her eyes, bends over, and gasps for breath. She switches off her Airwave radio, mutters in shock, then leans on the guard rail and retches onto the earth beyond it. The motorway marks the end of the pursuit, but not a controlled arrest: Clements’s flight ends in a fatal collision witnessed by Jo and the surveillance team.
