Teresa Coppull

Blow Out

Teresa Coppull is a detective sergeant in Merseyside’s Major Crime Unit whose work brings her into contact with Jo Stuart during investigations spanning Manchester and Merseyside. Known to Jo as Terry, she supplies local knowledge, works alongside Jo at crime scenes, and pursues lines of inquiry after a victim dies. Her role is not that of a distant source of information: she participates in the investigation’s concrete routines, from assessing a possible firing position to following up passive media evidence.

Identity and Professional Role

Coppull is introduced at a hospital beside the bed of Morris Arthur Grimshaw, where she is waiting while he is under medical care. Jo recognizes her and addresses her familiarly as Terry, suggesting an established working acquaintance. Coppull’s rank and unit place her within Merseyside’s Major Crime Unit, while her involvement in the case shows her operating in coordination with Jo’s investigation rather than outside it.

Her account establishes why Grimshaw matters to the inquiry. He is a Liverpool-based major figure in the North West drug scene, and Merseyside officers had arrested his gang in a major operation. Eighteen members were on remand, but Grimshaw alone had been granted bail. Coppull observes that he would have been safer in custody: the detail makes his release a consequential vulnerability, although the evidence does not establish who attacked him or why.

Work with Jo Stuart

Coppull’s exchanges with Jo combine professional urgency with familiarity. They meet at the hospital, then travel together to examine the location where Grimshaw was shot. When Jo asks when the incident happened, Coppull answers that it was Sunday afternoon. The concise answer anchors the investigation’s chronology and leads into their examination of the golf-course setting.

At the course, Coppull explains the basis for concentrating on two clumps of pine trees in the dunes. Witnesses had seen Grimshaw standing with his back to the dunes when a pellet struck him in the back of the neck. The trees were the only locations that offered a shooter cover. Jo judges the more distant clump likelier, but the exchange presents this as an assessment of the scene, not a confirmed identification of the firing point. Coppull contributes the witness-based reasoning; Jo weighs it against the geography.

This division of work reflects the investigation’s wider method: statements, physical circumstances, and possible routes of approach are considered together, while conclusions remain provisional. Their discussion narrows the field of inquiry without pretending that a plausible position is proof of who fired.

Grimshaw’s Death and the Vehicle Inquiry

The hospital visit initially leaves Grimshaw’s condition uncertain. He is being monitored in critical care, and the medical staff have not yet supplied the investigators with a definitive account. Later, as Coppull and Jo prepare to leave the golf course, Coppull checks her phone and reports that Grimshaw has died. Detective Superintendent Ellis is handling that part of the case, while Coppull has been assigned to pursue passive media analyses for potential suspect vehicles.

Jo offers to have her team send registration numbers so the two teams can look for a match. At that point, the investigators have few promising leads, and Jo privately understands the vehicle search as their only hope. Coppull’s task therefore turns a broad investigation into a practical search: identify vehicles from recorded media and compare them with the registrations supplied by Jo’s team.

The case is also difficult because the victims’ possible grudges do not produce a shared suspect list. Jo later tells senior officials that investigators have exhaustive lists of people who might have held a grudge against either victim, but no names appear on both lists. The available material includes partial boot prints and a piece of fabric from the Manchester crime scene, alongside hours of passive media, chiefly from fixed-speed and ANPR cameras. Coppull’s vehicle work belongs to this larger effort to extract usable leads from evidence that is extensive but not yet conclusive.

Investigative Method and Narrative Significance

Coppull’s contribution is defined by procedure rather than a decisive revelation. The episode at the dunes shows how a witness’s description can be translated into a spatial hypothesis; the later vehicle inquiry shows how passive recordings can be used to test possible movements. Neither step immediately identifies a culprit. The narrative’s emphasis on that gap between evidence gathered and conclusions proved makes her cross-force work part of the investigation’s realism.

That procedural texture is reinforced elsewhere in the inquiry. Jo uses a digest of the Murder Investigation Manual, which sets out key elements of investigative strategy, and insists that everyone on Operation Alecto receive the same information so that any team member might see a missing connection. Coppull’s cooperation fits that shared, distributed approach: information and tasks move between investigators and units, while leads remain open to scrutiny rather than becoming certainty by repetition.

The investigation eventually brings another victim, Heather Rand, into the pattern. At the hospital, Jo asks how Rand is doing; staff report that the police alert had enabled the emergency department to recognize the threat, remove the pellet, treat the wound, and administer the antidote. This later episode does not establish Coppull’s direct involvement in Rand’s care, but it underscores the stakes of the investigative work she shares across jurisdictions: timely communication can shape how a suspected attack is handled, even while the perpetrators remain unidentified.

Coppull’s character is therefore conveyed through steadiness, local expertise, and collegial exchange rather than an independent personal arc. She gives Jo a familiar, trusted point of contact, but also remains accountable to specific tasks and divided responsibilities. In a plot where investigative certainty is slow and the consequences of delay are grave, her practical partnership helps make inter-agency cooperation visible as both a working method and a necessary response to the limits of any single team.
