Ella and Anastasia

Cinder & Ella

Ella and Anastasia’s relationship is a fragile attempt at reconciliation inside a blended family: Ella offers her stepsister a place at FantasyCon as an apology and a chance to share an interest, but the gesture cannot erase their hostility. The invitation briefly opens a route toward peace; later, Anastasia’s mockery of Ella and Brian Oliver and Rob’s intervention expose how little trust has been repaired.

An Invitation as a Peace Offering

At the dinner table, Ella changes the subject from the pain of believing that she and Cinder will never meet. She turns instead to Anastasia, who is absorbed in her phone and ignoring everyone, and asks whether she would come to the convention. The invitation shocks the whole table. Vivian, Rob, and Juliette stare in disbelief, while Ella’s father and Jennifer watch Anastasia with hopeful anticipation. Anastasia herself can only ask whether Ella means her.

Anastasia immediately suspects pity and insults the convention as a gathering of freaks. Ella is stung, but the disappointment on her father’s and Jennifer’s faces matters more to her than answering the insult in kind. She explains that the invitation is neither pity nor an expectation that Anastasia like her: it is a truce, and an apology for having entered Anastasia’s life in a way Ella cannot undo. Ella points out that Juliette and Rob are Anastasia’s friends, and that Anastasia likes Brian Oliver. She even frames the invitation as a chance for Anastasia to try to win Brian away from Kaylee Summers, conceding that Anastasia is prettier than Kaylee. The compliment is deliberately practical as well as conciliatory: Ella is offering her stepsister an enjoyable day and a possible opportunity, not asking for instant affection.

The offer briefly changes the mood. Anastasia snorts but appears to suppress a smile, then objects that she is under house arrest until Christmas. Ella’s father offers to lift the punishment for one day if Anastasia behaves and wants to attend with her sisters. His description of the girls as sisters catches both Ella and Anastasia awkwardly; neither corrects him. The moment does not settle what they are to each other, but it shows the family trying to make room for a relationship that has not yet become comfortable.

The Limits of the Truce

The convention does not transform their relationship into easy solidarity. When Anastasia later jokes that Brian will abandon Kaylee for Ella, she turns Ella’s vulnerable hope into a taunt, imagining the romance as an inverted live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. The joke lands hard enough that Brian, secretly present and listening, nearly gives up his disguise to answer her. His reaction reveals that Anastasia’s cruelty is directed not only at Ella but also at the possibility that Ella might be loved.

Rob speaks before Brian can. He tells Anastasia to stop, then explains why he had refused to take her to the prom: her looks do not outweigh what he sees as her cruelty and self-centeredness. The rebuke shocks the group, including Brian, and earns Rob his respect. Anastasia’s eyes fill with tears, and she leaves without replying. The scene reverses the earlier family-table arrangement: there, Ella tried to draw Anastasia into a shared outing; here, Anastasia is expelled from the group by a direct naming of the behavior that keeps others at a distance.

Rob then takes Ella’s face in his hands and kisses her passionately. He tells her she is beautiful and admits that he is jealous because she is about to go inside and make Brian Oliver fall in love with her. His tenderness complicates the aftermath of his confrontation with Anastasia: the defense of Ella is not a declaration that Rob expects to be chosen, but an expression of both affection and jealousy. Anastasia has already walked away before this intimate moment, leaving the conflict unresolved rather than converting it into reconciliation.

Silence After the Convention

On the drive home, Ella cries and sniffs in the otherwise silent car. Anastasia does not speak at all. When the car reaches the driveway, she jumps out and slams the front door before anyone else has unfastened a seat belt. Her silence follows Rob’s public rebuke, but Ella cannot tell whether Anastasia is still angry about what he said or furious at Brian’s emphatic declaration that he and Ella belong together and that he will not leave her. Ella suspects both explanations and doubts Anastasia will speak to her again.

The sequence leaves their relationship suspended between an offered peace and renewed estrangement. Ella had made a specific effort to include Anastasia without demanding that she reciprocate; Anastasia had shown a fleeting sign of amusement at the offer, but later returned to mockery and withdrew when confronted. The slammed door makes the limits of the family’s hoped-for sisterhood visible: the invitation created an opening, not a resolution, and Ella is left without knowing whether Anastasia’s silence is anger, hurt, or both.
