The Tree’s Promise

The Tree’s Promise
A sign of hope
Csongor returns from searching distant lands without finding the beloved who inhabits his dreams. The miraculous tree offers a new possibility: its golden fruit and supernatural origin suggest that the object of his longing may be near.
A first encounter
Mirígy tells him that a fairy woman tends the tree, and Tünde soon appears beneath its branches. The tree therefore becomes more than a marvel; it gives Csongor a place to connect yearning with a real person.
The Lovers’ Brief Meeting

The Lovers’ Brief Meeting
Recognition and interruption
Tünde and Csongor find one another beneath the tree, but their happiness lasts only briefly. Tünde believes an unseen enemy has learned her secret and says that she must return to her distant home.
Separation begins
Neither lover wishes to leave, yet the danger and Tünde’s approaching deadline defeat their pleas. Their meeting changes the story’s direction: Csongor no longer seeks an ideal in the abstract but pursues the woman he has actually met.
The Crossroads Quest

The Crossroads Quest
A route without certainty
Left alone, Csongor resolves to find Tünde in Tündérhon. At the Hármas út, the apparent instruction to take the middle path does not settle which road is truly central or whether any road leads to his destination.
Choosing pursuit
The crossroads turns private grief into a journey across a bewildering world. Csongor proceeds despite having no reliable guide, trusting that desire can supply direction where knowledge and worldly authority cannot.
The Repeated Near Misses

The Repeated Near Misses
Encounters without reunion
At the Hajnal birodalma, Csongor and Tünde pass close to one another without speaking. Later, an enchanted sleep keeps Csongor from greeting her when she comes to the garden, turning proximity into another painful failure.
Pursuit redirected
A staged prophecy at the Varázskút sends Csongor after a phantom guide while Tünde sees images that make her suspect betrayal. Their separation is sustained not by lack of feeling but by trickery, distance, and timing.
The Final Reunion

The Final Reunion
Tünde’s changed status
After learning that Mirígy deceived her, Tünde returns to the place where their love began. Éj has condemned her to mortal life, so reunion will mean sharing a finite human existence rather than restoring an untouched fairy past.
A chosen future
Csongor wakes to find Tünde beside the renewed tree and accepts the life she offers. The search ends not with an escape from change but with the lovers choosing a shared home and a happiness grounded in mutual presence.
