A Strange Sky

Weather Turns Ominous
Signs in the hills
Heavy rain batters the area while dogs howl from the surrounding hillsides. The sky turns an intense, biblical purple, and residents mention strange local beliefs about wind and weather without abandoning their drinking.
Caoimhin watches the tide climb along the harbour wall and worries that the hotel could flood. The people around him keep returning to familiar talk about routes and distances, even when the danger grows visible.
Unanswered warnings
An otter appears in the kitchen, heading away from the water toward higher ground. The animal’s movement suggests a disturbance more serious than a routine storm, but it cannot make the hotel guests act with urgency.
Caoimhin asks directly whether the water will flood the building. The answer that the area has not flooded in sixteen years briefly reassures the locals, while leaving the reader aware that the tide is still rising.
Water Enters the Hotel

Isolation by Water
The danger becomes physical
The roadway between the hotel and harbour disappears beneath the flood, and the water reaches the front steps. The local emergency grows severe enough to bring staff and older guests together in the lounge.
The lights across the harbour go out, while the storm continues. The guests realize that their trouble is not part of a wider national emergency and that outside help may not arrive quickly.
A refuge upstairs
Curtains are carried down to block the doors, but water bursts through before the makeshift barriers can work. Caoimhin moves everyone to the upper function room just in time.
There, the hotel’s supplies and lights become a temporary refuge. The flood changes the residents’ familiar building into a threatened space, but it also gives Caoimhin a clear task: keep the people together and make the room livable.
The Waters Begin to Recede

Waiting Without Rescue
The emergency continues
Mobile signals fail and no rescuers appear on the horizon. Guests dance and drink above the rising water while the lower parts of the hotel fill with debris and the storm remains dangerous.
The crisis produces strange scenes of confessions, fear, and animal life displaced by the flood. What began as an argument about whether the tide would rise has become a night in which ordinary expectations no longer apply.
A fragile reprieve
Alexei returns from checking the stairs and shows that the water has dropped a couple of steps. Caoimhin responds with relief but does not assume the danger is over.
The group returns to dancing, now aware that the hotel has survived the worst of the immediate surge. The receding water creates a pause rather than a clean resolution, allowing the night to turn from disaster toward reflection.
