A Doctor in Decline

Jameson Against the Headache
Concealed dependence
Doctor Sot drives to a supermarket for whiskey, disguising his drinking as a practical response to headaches and visions. His old car, Elizabeth, is named for his mother and treated as a long-suffering companion.
At the shop, he buys alcohol along with ordinary household items and jokes with a patient who recognizes him. The humor masks a professional life increasingly shaped by drinking and fear of what he sees.
A fresh impulse
In the car park, Doctor Sot notices a young traveller who seems strikingly alive to him. Her presence revives his sense of vocation, and he decides to contact the health board about providing outreach to the camp.
His offer mixes sincere concern with restlessness and a desire to escape his ordinary self. Service becomes another of his impulsive attempts to make his life feel purposeful.
The Mountain Visit

Outreach at Slieve Bo
Entering an unfamiliar camp
Doctor Sot drives Elizabeth up a rough track to the travellers’ camp, where children and skinny dogs surround him. He introduces himself as a health-board doctor and announces that he has come to discuss nutrition and sexual health.
The residents respond with teasing curiosity rather than hostility. Doctor Sot struggles to deliver formal information but finds a place among them as they share tea, drink, and talk.
A convivial evening
He offers whiskey, listens to Joxie The Rant, and learns that the camp includes Mag, who is said to be in her bender. The visit gradually loses its official shape as conversation and alcohol take over.
Doctor Sot’s generosity and dependence become inseparable. His outreach gives him a reason to stay, but he is not fully in control of what the evening is becoming.
Elizabeth in the Ravine

A Crash and an Unexpected Stay
The journey ends
After eating with the camp, Doctor Sot attempts to drive away and sends Elizabeth into a ravine. The crash ends the car’s long service and leaves him injured, but the travellers help him out and make room for him overnight.
He calls Sal with the bad news, while she responds with the familiarity of someone accustomed to his disappearances. His latest adventure does not provoke a dramatic rupture in their marriage.
Mag’s quiet company
Later, Doctor Sot finds Mag awake in her shelter, surrounded by her drawings and theories about time and memory. They share cake, and he sits beside her as she falls asleep, moved by her vulnerability and strange intelligence.
The intimacy remains brief and gentle, not a solution to either person’s difficulties. By morning, Sal is quietly covering the mirrors at home, maintaining her own private response to a husband whose life repeatedly slips beyond ordinary boundaries.
