The First Lesson

Intimacy on Her Terms
A confident instructor
Silvija tells Patrick that she will teach him about female anatomy, then makes clear that he will not be using his hands. Patrick is nervous and trembles, while she treats the lesson with directness and control.
She promises to kiss him if he does well and keeps that promise. The brief kiss matters to Patrick because it makes a highly unequal arrangement feel like the beginning of a romance.
Desire and instruction
Silvija is technically a lesbian, though Patrick believes there may be movement in her position. Her boundaries remain explicit even as she offers instruction and affection.
Patrick’s desire leads him to interpret attention as possibility. Their relationship begins with genuine tenderness but not with an agreement about what either person wants from the other.
Shared Work and Shared Days

Partners in an Unsettled Scene
Work becomes companionship
Patrick carries equipment while Silvija directs shoots through Berlin’s fashion world. Their days involve difficult clients, unusual models, beer, cigarettes, and arguments about what counts as meaningful photography.
Patrick remains attentive to her moods and takes in her advice about art. The routine of working and walking together gives their connection a domestic quality, even though neither has called it a conventional partnership.
A closeness with limits
Silvija teaches him to look through the camera rather than at it, and he experiences that lesson as an extension of her personal attention. He remembers the way she placed her hands over his to steady them.
Yet her rules and independence remain in place. Patrick’s sense of closeness grows partly from the fact that he is learning from her, while Silvija continues to determine the terms of their intimacy.
The Goodbye at the Station

Affection Without Possession
Separation arrives
Silvija packs her belongings and tells Patrick that the studio has had its time. She says he must find his own life, a statement that makes clear she will not continue to organize his world around hers.
Patrick reacts angrily and feels abandoned. His attachment has grown beyond the balance she intended, even though she has given him affection, guidance, and a place in her life.
The photograph remains
At the station, Silvija hugs Patrick awkwardly and leaves quickly. She promises to email and take calls, but in the years afterward she does neither.
Patrick keeps the photograph in which her reflection appears on a bench beside him. The image preserves a fragment of intimacy without turning her absence into proof of betrayal or return.
