John Murphy

Dark Lies the Island

John Murphy, an alcoholic funeral director, is a loud and volatile presence in the hotel lounge, where his blunt claims about death and burial sit alongside a strikingly ardent declaration of love for his wife. The contrast makes him more than a comic local fixture: his coarse public manner can contain attachment as emphatic as his bluster.

Identity and Introduction

The hotel’s locals routinely ignore the narrator, a fretful newcomer they consider unsuited to life in the west of Ireland, and instead listen to John Murphy. His standing in the lounge is established through performance: he commands attention with a brazen insistence that his work extends to anyone who dies. He boasts that he will bury anything that moves, then dismisses the distinctions among bastards, suicides, and tinkers, presenting himself as indifferent to whom he takes on.

Temper and Conduct

John’s bravado has a physical edge. After drinking his third pint, he is described as aggressive; as the narrator passes along the bar, John grabs his elbow and complains that the possessed woman in the house will put him in the ground. The narrator tries to stop the conversation, but John insists that he means this literally. His funeral-director identity and his threat of being buried converge in a grimly comic exchange, with death both his trade and the fate he fears.

Marriage and Contradiction

John later tells the gathering, loudly, that he loves his wife. He says she still excites him after twenty-eight years of marriage, describing his desire in the same profane, unvarnished register that shapes his other speeches. The confession complicates his earlier boast of indifference: a man who claims not to care whom he buries speaks with unmistakable intensity about the continuing force of his marriage.

Narrative Role

John’s interruptions help define the hotel lounge as a place where the locals’ rough talk competes with the narrator’s unease. His claim that the woman in the house will literally bury him also echoes the storm-bound atmosphere around the hotel, where rain and threatening skies make danger feel close. The text does not resolve whether his fear is justified; instead, John’s certainty and the narrator’s reluctance to hear more preserve the episode’s mixture of menace, comedy, and uncertainty.
