"Doesn't my body have a Chichikov's element"

Dead Souls

The expression “Is there not in me an element of Chichikov?” is the narrator’s challenge to readers who would dismiss Chichikov as merely an object of amusement. It shifts the book’s satire from the supposedly ridiculous people of the provinces to the reader’s own capacity for self-deception, making recognition—not distance—the test of the laughter.

From Amusement to Self-Examination

After imagining readers congratulating themselves for recognizing strange provincial individuals and unconscionable rascals, the narrator changes the terms of the encounter. In quiet solitude, each reader is asked to examine their own soul and consider whether Chichikov’s qualities might also be present there. The question refuses the comfort of treating his conduct as belonging exclusively to someone else.

The Threat of Recognition

The narrator makes this self-examination social as well as inward: an acquaintance might pass someone in the street and, with a barely suppressed sneer, identify him as Chichikov. The imagined remark turns the name into a public judgment, but its force depends on the possibility that the judgment could strike home. Chichikov is thus not only a particular character but a measure through which readers may recognize traits they would rather attribute to a stranger.

The Narrator, the Reader, and Chichikov

The challenge arrives in a conspicuously direct address to the audience, interrupting the story’s comic account of Chichikov’s misadventures. Yet the hero is not absent: he lies asleep in his britchka while the narrator observes that his name has been repeated so often that he may almost have heard it. The narrator also admits that Chichikov is irritable when spoken of disrespectfully and that a quarrel with him would imperil the author, since the two still have a long way to travel together. This playful return to the sleeping traveler keeps the moral appeal attached to the continuing narrative rather than resolving it into an abstract lesson.
