Trishkin’s coat

Dead Souls

“Trishkin’s coat” is a proverb-like image for repair by subtraction: damage in one place is addressed by taking material from another, so that the attempted remedy merely relocates the disorder. In the village inspected on the return journey, the image describes a whole system of upkeep in which patching substitutes for genuine maintenance and leaves poverty visible everywhere.

The Village as a Scene of Neglect

The journey back offers no improvement on the earlier prospect. Disorder lies openly across the village, where a fresh puddle has formed in the street. The neglect is not confined to the peasants’ quarters or to the barin’s: it marks both. A furious woman in greasy sackcloth beats a young girl nearly to death while cursing an absent or indistinct third person; nearby, two peasants watch with stoic indifference, one scratching himself and the other yawning. The buildings seem to echo that weary response. Every roof has a gaping hole, and even Platon yawns as he looks on.

How the Patching Works

The image takes concrete form in the houses. One hut uses a piece of wooden fencing in place of a roof, while sticks stolen from the barin’s barn prop up its crumbling window frames. Rather than repairing each structure, the inhabitants appear to transfer fragments from one damaged place to another. The narrator calls this the system of Trishkin’s coat: cuffs and collar are cut up to mend the elbows. The familiar garment becomes a compact description of a remedy that consumes what it needs elsewhere and cannot restore the whole.

Meaning and Contrast

The expression makes the village’s visible disrepair legible as more than a collection of broken roofs and windows. Its pattern is recurrent: a patch covers one failure at the cost of another, so the appearance of repair preserves the underlying want and disorder. The image’s force comes from that mismatch between mending and restoration. Nothing in the scene suggests that the houses have been made sound; their repairs advertise how thoroughly maintenance has failed.
