Rachel Sexton—Sedgewick Sexton

Deception Point

Rachel Sexton’s relationship with her father, Sedgewick Sexton, is marked by distance, yet in the crisis surrounding the meteorite data she turns that distance into an unexpected form of protection. Unable to risk sending the evidence to William Pickering, she chooses her father’s Senate office because she believes his political interests and influence could help force the White House to stop the attackers.

Estrangement and the remembered number

Rachel knows her father’s office fax number by heart for a painful reason: after her mother’s death, Sedgewick handled many details of the estate without dealing with Rachel in person. The number thus carries the trace of an earlier separation. It is not a sign of habitual closeness but a practical fact lodged in her memory through an experience of being kept at a distance.

A desperate choice of recipient

During the crisis, Rachel and Michael Tolland are trying to buy time while under attack. When a voice guesses that she faxed the data to William Pickering, Rachel recognizes that Pickering would have been her first choice. But she fears the attackers may already have eliminated him, and sending the material to him would risk its disappearance. She instead uses the only other fax number she knows by heart: her father’s office.

Evidence placed beyond immediate reach

Rachel’s choice rests on both political calculation and physical security. She expects Sedgewick to have the motivation to release the meteorite data and enough influence to pressure the White House into calling off the attackers. At the same time, she knows he is unlikely to be at his office that night, which she keeps locked like a vault. The fax therefore functions as a time-locked deposit: even if the attackers learn its destination, breaking into a senator’s office in the Philip A. Hart Senate Office Building would be difficult to do unnoticed.

A changed use of the relationship

The evidence establishes no reconciliation between father and daughter; it shows Rachel making a calculated appeal through the resources attached to her father’s position. A relationship shaped by distance becomes, at this moment, a route for preserving the data. Sedgewick’s political motives and access matter precisely because Rachel can use them even while their personal relationship remains strained.
