The contrast makes his absence less a matter of distance than of concealment; those closest to the search cannot recognize that its object remains among them.

On the day he disappears, Yurii leaves Gordon and walks into Bronnaia Street shortly before dusk, heading home. Less than a hundred yards along the way, he meets Evgraf, whom he has neither seen nor heard of for more than three years. Evgraf has arrived in Moscow unexpectedly, as usual. Between one corner and another on the narrow, crowded street, he quickly gathers the essential facts of Yurii’s troubles and devises a plan: Yurii must disappear and remain in hiding for a time.

Evgraf’s plan

Evgraf makes the disappearance workable rather than merely advising it. He rents Yurii a room on Kamerger Street, as the street is still called, near the Arts Theater, and supplies him with money. He also uses his influence to seek a good hospital position that will leave Yurii room to continue his research. The plan therefore offers both immediate shelter and a possible return to meaningful professional work.

Evgraf also addresses the unresolved separation from Yurii’s family in Paris. He promises to settle the uncertainty, whether by arranging for Yurii to join them or for them to come to him, and undertakes these arrangements himself. His intervention gathers lodging, financial support, employment prospects, and family reunion into a single rescue, though the promised reunion is not presented as already accomplished.

Protection and uncertainty

Evgraf’s help restores Yurii’s confidence, as it has before, but its source remains a riddle. Yurii does not try to discover how his brother possesses such power. The episode thus pairs tangible acts of assistance with an unexplained capacity to arrange them: Evgraf’s protection is effective, but its mechanisms stay outside Yurii’s understanding.

The searchers, meanwhile, continue looking before gradually accepting that they will find no trace of him. Their failure and Evgraf’s success depend on the same fact: Yurii is not removed from Moscow but concealed within the district already under search. The hiding place makes the disappearance possible without requiring a long journey, while leaving his family’s uncertain situation unresolved until Evgraf can act on his promise.
