Demiguise
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemThe Demiguise is a peaceful, herbivorous beast from the Far East, notable for vanishing when threatened and for the long, silvery hair used to make Invisibility Cloaks. Its entry brings together two forms of concealment: the animal’s own defensive invisibility and a pelt sought for a garment that can hide its wearer.
Appearance and Habits
The Demiguise is difficult to find even in its native Far East. When threatened, it can make itself invisible; only wizards skilled in its capture can see it. The account thus presents finding one not as a matter of ordinary observation but as a specialized magical challenge.
In appearance, it resembles a graceful ape. Large, black, doleful eyes are often hidden by its hair, and its whole body is covered in long, fine, silky, silvery fur. Its peaceful, herbivorous nature contrasts with the difficulty of locating it: the defining problem is evasion, not aggression.
Hair and Magical Use
Demiguise pelts are highly valued because the hair can be spun into Invisibility Cloaks. The animal’s coat is therefore both part of its distinctive appearance and a sought-after magical material. That value sits uneasily beside the description of the beast as peaceful: the same creature that disappears to avoid a threat is prized for a substance that enables concealment.
Classification and Concealment
The Ministry of Magic classifies the Demiguise as XXXX. Its invisibility makes it a particularly vivid example of the difficulties involved in locating and managing magical creatures that can evade sight. The broader concealment framework assigns wizarding governing bodies responsibility for the concealment, care, and control of magical beasts, beings, and spirits; it also describes safe habitats, Memory Charms when Muggles witness what they should not, and the Office of Misinformation’s intervention in the worst collisions between magical and Muggle worlds. These measures show the institutional setting around a creature whose own defense is to disappear, without specifying a particular intervention directed at the Demiguise itself.
