Dugbog
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemThe Dugbog is a marsh-dwelling creature whose stillness is its camouflage: it resembles a piece of dead wood until its finned paws and sharp teeth give it away. It moves through marshland by gliding and slithering, feeding mainly on small mammals, but it can also inflict severe injuries on the ankles of people walking there. Its appetite for Mandrake creates a further, unexpected conflict with the plant’s growers.
Appearance and Habitat
Found in Europe and North and South America, the Dugbog is adapted to marshland. When stationary, it can be mistaken for a piece of dead wood; closer inspection reveals the finned paws and very sharp teeth that distinguish a living predator from its apparent disguise. Its movement is equally suited to the wet terrain, as it glides and slithers through the marsh.
Diet and Human Encounters
Small mammals make up most of the Dugbog’s diet, but its favourite food is Mandrake. Its camouflage and marsh habitat bring it into contact with people on foot: a walker who mistakes it for inert wood may suffer severe injury to the ankles. The danger therefore lies not only in its teeth but in the contrast between its harmless-looking stillness and its capacity to attack.
Mandrake-growers face a different kind of encounter. The plant is prized, yet the Dugbog’s preference for it means that a grower may seize the leaves of a prized Mandrake only to discover that the apparent plant is not what it seemed. The account thus presents the creature as both a physical hazard to people and a threat to cultivation, rooted in the same concealed, ambush-like way of life.
