Flavius Belby
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemFlavius Belby is a wizard known for surviving a Lethifold attack while holidaying in Papua New Guinea in 1782. His account is the earliest known record of the creature and gives practical force to the crucial fact that a Patronus is the only known spell that can repel it.
Identity and Significance
Belby enters the record through a single extraordinary experience rather than through a broader account of his life. The book identifies him as a wizard and credits him with the earliest surviving account of a Lethifold, a creature whose nocturnal attacks are especially dangerous because it generally targets sleeping victims. His survival made his testimony evidence of how such an attack could be resisted.
The Attack and Escape
The attack took place during Belby’s holiday in Papua New Guinea in 1782. Near one o’clock in the morning, as he was beginning to feel drowsy, he heard a soft rustling nearby. At first he took it for the leaves of a tree outside, an ordinary explanation that delayed recognition of the danger. His account culminates in the Lethifold flying across the room and slithering out of sight after being repelled by his Patronus.
Account and Legacy
Belby’s experience establishes the Patronus as the only spell known to repel a Lethifold. That discovery is sharply qualified by the creature’s habits: because it usually attacks people while they sleep, its intended victims rarely have the chance to use magic. Belby’s survival therefore stands out not as evidence that the threat is easily overcome, but as a rare documented escape that explains both the means of resistance and why it is seldom available.
