Mackled Malaclaw

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The Mackled Malaclaw is a land-dwelling creature found mostly on rocky coastlines around Europe. Its resemblance to a lobster is misleading: it is not food, and its bite brings a distinctive after-effect of bad luck that can persist for up to a week.

Habitat and Appearance

The Malaclaw lives on land, chiefly along rocky European coasts. It can grow to twelve inches long and is light grey with deep-green spots. Though it passes for a lobster at a glance, the resemblance does not make it suitable for eating: its flesh is unfit for human consumption and can cause a high fever.

Diet and Behaviour

The creature eats small crustaceans but may attempt to tackle larger prey. This contrast between its modest size and willingness to attack bigger animals gives its description a practical edge: the Malaclaw is not merely a coastal curiosity, but a creature whose behaviour can bring it into contact with larger targets.

Bite and Classification

The Malaclaw’s bite has an unusual effect beyond the injury itself: a victim becomes highly unlucky for as long as a week. That consequence makes an encounter potentially troublesome well after the creature has bitten, distinguishing its danger from an ordinary wound. The entry assigns it an M.O.M. Classification of XXX, placing it within the Ministry’s five-category system for rating a creature’s perceived dangerousness.

Place in the Bestiary

In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Malaclaw is presented through compact reference-book details—range, size, colouring, diet, and effects on humans. The warning against eating it and the specific duration of the bad-luck effect turn an otherwise lobster-like coastal animal into a creature that resists familiar assumptions: its appearance suggests one thing, while its flesh and bite impose a very different kind of risk.
