A Monument in Stone

Petro’s Art Enters the Home
A commission
Petro first attracts Docteur Anger while carving a memorial to Thérèse Anger. The doctor watches the sculptor release a lifelike figure from marble, finding in the work a place for memory and grief.
Art as transformation
The sculpture becomes an early model for Petro’s belief that stone can preserve presence. His craft will later shape the family home as another attempt to give form to imagination.
The Floating Villa

A House Like a Vessel
Unusual architecture
Petro builds a villa with wavering contours, colored tiles, and a glass ceiling mapped as a starry sky. Stefania sees a serpent or a boat, while Petro imagines an underwater palace.
A shared dream
The house embodies the couple’s desire to make their inner world tangible. Its beauty is also unstable: it seems to float above ordinary ground, foreshadowing the fragility of the refuge it represents.
Water in the Rooms

The House Under Siege
The flood rises
Rain and flooding turn the garden into a pond and force water through the house’s roof. Stefania changes buckets while continuing to cook and serve the household.
Refuge becomes burden
Petro’s imaginative villa cannot keep out the weather. Its leaking structure converts the symbolic floating house into a practical danger and intensifies Stefania’s unacknowledged labor.
The Stone Woman’s Secret

A Figure Above the Salon
Hidden in plain sight
A carved woman sits above the salon, her arms extended as if waiting or praying. Felix repeatedly seeks her embrace and hides near her, treating stone as a shelter.
A secret within the sculpture
The statue also conceals treasures stolen from religious sites. Its role links Petro’s artistic imagination to the criminal mystery and makes the house itself a container for secrets.
The Burning Refuge

The Villa Collapses
Domestic conflict ignites
After Stefania exposes what she believes is Adèle’s affair, the household’s emotional order fractures. A later shattered lamp starts a fire that traps the women inside the villa.
The dream is consumed
The glass roof collapses, the stone woman falls, and the hidden treasures are exposed. Petro’s elaborate refuge disappears in smoke and ruin as Stefania’s old vision of safety gives way to uncertainty.
