Le Taormina
Felix AustriaLe Taormina is the transatlantic ship that gives Stefania Tchornenko and Velvele’s proposed escape a route, a date, and a price in hardship. A vessel built for six hundred third-class passengers, it stands at the threshold between Stefania’s constrained life and the fresh start she imagines across the ocean; the book presents the crossing as a plan and a vision, not as a completed voyage.
The proposed passage
Velvele says he has ordered two tickets for Le Taormina without first asking Stefania. The ship was built by A. Stephen & Sons, and is due to leave Hamburg on March 13. He acknowledges that it is not the best ship and stresses its third-class accommodation, but assures her that her place will be in the section reserved for women. His insistence that the offer is professional, and that she should take time to consider it, frames the passage as both a practical arrangement and a consequential invitation.
A vessel for a new beginning
The tickets are part of a larger proposal: Velvele has some capital, knows how to sell and arrange things, and believes he can read what people want. Stefania, in turn, imagines cooking well enough to rival Franz Sacher’s restaurant in Vienna. Together, she thinks, they could become excellent partners and collaborators, with the restaurant bearing her name. Le Taormina thus links a particular ship and departure from Hamburg to an imagined business built around Velvele’s commercial skill and Stefania’s cooking.
The imagined voyage and its limits
Later, Stefania pictures herself sailing among the ocean waves with Velvele, recalling Ernest Thorn’s prediction when he gave her a paper boat. She repeats the ship’s name, its Hamburg departure, its builder, its six hundred third-class places, and the assurance that she will travel in the women’s section. The repeated particulars make the imagined escape strikingly tangible, even as the passage remains prospective. The ship carries hope of starting over, but the evidence does not establish that Stefania boards it or reaches the New World.
