Séraphins

Felix Austria

The Séraphins are the six-winged, fire-associated angels who open a vision of the celestial choir near the novel’s end. Their role is not merely decorative: the heat of their singing gives divine love a physical, audible form, before the vision unfolds into a carefully ordered chorus of angelic ranks.

Identity and Appearance

The Séraphins are described as fiery beings with six wings. Their song flows from burning throats, an image that joins spiritual devotion to bodily intensity. Fire is not presented as destruction here; it becomes the medium through which the Lord’s love is voiced.

Place in the Celestial Choir

The Séraphins begin a litany in which each heavenly order contributes a distinct part. The Cherubim, with four faces, lion mouths, and eagle beaks, pour forth heavenly wisdom; the Thrones, nearest to God, sing in calm serenity. The Dominions hold the melody’s main theme, while the Virtues move through its highest notes. The Powers steady it with a monotonous hum that seems to draw a sacred circle.

The vision expands from song into cosmic arrangement. The archons unfurl the starry sky, move waves and clouds, play with the winds, and cover everything in a snowy down. The archangels place their respective planets among the stars like notes on a musical staff, tracing human destinies. The Séraphins’ opening music thus belongs to a whole imagined order in which celestial hierarchy, the natural world, and human fate are brought into harmony.

Narrative and Religious Significance

After this elaborate account of the choir, the text turns to a first-person plural liturgical voice: “Nous qui dans ce mystère représentons les chérubins”. The singers represent the Cherubim and sing the thrice-holy hymn. The passage does not identify the Séraphins with those earthly singers; instead, their fiery song forms part of a larger vision that connects the imagined ranks of heaven with ritual performance.

The description gives the celestial hierarchy differentiated work rather than treating angels as an undivided multitude. Love, wisdom, melody, balance, cosmic motion, and destiny each have their place. Within that ordered design, the Séraphins’ burning song establishes the vision’s first and most forceful expression of divine love.
