Silver's effects on shapeshifters

Firebug

Silver's effects on shapeshifters are demonstrated through Ezra’s injury: a trap with a high silver content did not merely wound him but slowed his healing and turned part of his calf necrotic. The episode establishes silver as a material danger to a shapeshifter’s recovery, with lasting consequences even after rescue.

The Trap and Its Discovery

As the group moved through the woods, Ezra alerted them to a bear trap. Ikka used a rock to trigger it safely, then identified its high silver content and showed the neutralized trap to Olive. Olive went ahead to warn the others along the line, making the trap a threat the group had to account for as they continued.

Ezra’s Injury and Recovery

The trap had caught Ezra, a Were-fox, before Ikka and Olive freed him. The silver slowed his healing, and the affected flesh had become necrotic, requiring part of his calf to be cut away. He had also lost a great deal of blood; the account notes that he was fortunate not to lose the leg.

His recovery was expected to take a long time. Ezra would retain a scar, but he was expected to regain use of the leg if he followed Rose’s care. The contrast between the injury’s severity and the possibility of recovery makes the effect specific: silver causes damage that ordinary shapeshifter healing does not quickly overcome, while proper care remains essential.
