October 8, 1997, marks the night when a power failure across Skåne led to the discovery of Sonja Hökberg’s burned body inside the Ystad power substation. The date binds a regional emergency to a killing: what first appears to be a failure in the electrical network is revealed as the consequence of a person’s presence among the power lines.

The Outage and Its Cause

During the night of October 8, a Sydkraft duty engineer was called to the substation after learning that 25 per cent of Skåne had lost power. The substation was a central connection point in the electricity network, so damage there could affect a broad region. At the site, the gates had been forced open, but the transformer-building door was ajar rather than visibly forced. Inside, the engineer found a burned corpse among the power lines. He reported that a person had short-circuited the region; the outage was no longer simply a technical emergency but the scene of a death.

Identification Before Dawn

The police were alerted shortly after midnight. As the investigation proceeded in darkness and rain, Wallander initially shared the assumption that the victim was a man. The pathologist established that the body was a woman, and a technician found a handbag north of the gates. Its oak-leaf clasp was familiar to Wallander from the previous day: it belonged to Sonja Hökberg. At 2:10 a.m., the handbag connected the body at the substation to the woman who had escaped from the police station about thirteen hours earlier.

Restoration and the Investigation

Ystad’s power was restored shortly after 3 a.m., while Wallander and the technicians were still at the substation. Restoring electricity did not resolve the central questions raised by the night: whether Hökberg had died by suicide or had been murdered, how she had reached the site, and why the gates had been forced while the building door appeared not to have been. Wallander and Martinsson considered that someone might have driven her there, and began checking who could have access to the substation keys.

The date therefore marks both a practical return of power and the opening of a more difficult inquiry. In the same pre-dawn hours, the blackout’s physical cause becomes clear, while the circumstances of Hökberg’s death remain uncertain. The sequence turns October 8 from a date in the duty roster into the point at which the investigation links an escaped suspect, a damaged power station, and a body found among the lines.
