Planning the Advance

A Larger Operation
The objective
General Golz prepares an attack intended to seize ground near Segovia. The bridge demolition is one part of a wider plan to prevent enemy reinforcements from reaching the pass.
Limited control
Golz distrusts the conditions under which he must operate: orders may change, support may fail to arrive, and the attack may not begin on schedule. Jordan is warned to treat the planned hour as uncertain.
Enemy Preparations

Signals in the Sky
A disturbing concentration
Large formations of enemy bombers and fighters cross the mountains, far more than the guerrillas have previously seen. Their appearance makes Jordan suspect that the enemy is preparing to meet an attack.
Information from the road
Anselmo and Rafael are assigned to observe traffic and guard changes. Reports of military movement strengthen the likelihood that the enemy knows what is coming.
The Message Sent

A Warning for Command
Jordan’s report
After learning that the enemy has moved troops and antitank guns, Jordan writes a dispatch for General Golz. He asks that the new information be considered before the offensive proceeds.
A dangerous journey
Andrés carries the message through the lines. Jordan cannot know whether the warning will reach the right headquarters in time, or whether anyone can still halt the operation.
The Warning Is Delayed

Bureaucratic Interference
A false suspicion
Andrés and Rogelio Gomez reach André Marty, who interprets the dispatch as evidence of treachery and detains them. His suspicion delays the message despite the urgency of their mission.
Too much momentum
Karkov eventually intervenes and secures the dispatch, but military preparations are already in motion. Even a valid warning may arrive too late to change the attack.
Bombers Over the Pass

An Attack No Longer Secret
The assault begins
The bombers arrive as Golz watches the opening of the attack. He understands from Jordan’s warning that the enemy has had time to prepare and that the intended surprise is gone.
An unresolved outcome
Golz accepts that the offensive must proceed, while Duval briefly considers stopping it. Jordan’s bridge is destroyed, but the novel ends before the campaign’s final outcome is known.
