A Messenger Chosen

Carrying the Warning
A necessary journey
Jordan chooses Andrés to carry a dispatch to General Golz because he knows the mountain routes and can travel through the lines. The message reports enemy preparations.
Personal conflict
Andrés wants to return in time for the assault. Delivering the message may keep him from sharing the danger faced by his comrades.
Held at the Wire

Suspicion at the Front
An unfriendly reception
Republican sentries challenge Andrés, threaten to throw a grenade, and make him pass through several belts of wire with his hands raised. His papers do not immediately persuade them.
A familiar problem
He stays patient, explaining his identity and mission repeatedly. The delay reflects a system in which fear of infiltration makes a genuine messenger look suspicious.
A Commander Takes Over

Gomez Assists
A brief acceleration
At battalion headquarters, Rogelio Gomez recognizes the seriousness of Andrés’s mission and takes him by motorcycle toward higher command. He challenges a staff officer who dismisses the report.
Another checkpoint
The two encounter traffic controls and military confusion on the road. Their progress depends as much on individual initiative as on official orders.
Marty Seizes the Papers

A Dispatch Confiscated
Political suspicion
At the command post, André Marty sees the message and assumes it signals treason. He has Andrés and Gomez arrested instead of sending the warning onward.
Preventable delay
The dispatch is not read as military intelligence. A man with power to interfere mistakes suspicion for vigilance and holds up the information when time is running out.
The Message Reaches Duval

Too Late to Stop
Intervention succeeds
Karkov learns of the detained messengers and forces Marty to release the dispatch. Andrés and Gomez reach Golz’s staff, and Duval recognizes the seriousness of the warning.
The attack proceeds
Duval tries to halt the operation but hears the planes before he can act. The mission reaches its intended recipient, yet the delay leaves little chance to change events.
