Zlatá ulička
Foucault's PendulumZlatá ulička is the Prague alley where Dr. Dee and his companion encounter a golem during their passage through the Jewish quarter. The encounter transforms a journey through a tense, secretive city into an apparently supernatural confrontation, and ends with Dee recovering a scroll from the creature’s remains.
Setting and Approach
The alley appears after Dee and his companion cross a dark entrance to the Jewish quarter and pass through narrow lanes. Their route runs near the Jewish cemetery and the Christmas market, where stalls stand around a puppet theater. The surrounding streets are described as old and uncanny: carved doors, a bronze fountain, and unexplained sounds from the roofs and drainpipes make the built environment seem to conceal a life of its own.
The approach is shadowed by political suspicion. Dee warns that, if news of a failed encounter has spread, other groups may act independently; he also fears the Jerusalemites’ agents in Prague. An old man passing them murmurs a warning about Athanasius Pernath, and Dee answers that he fears another Athanasius. The alley is therefore reached through a landscape where rumors, rival groups, and uncertain identities already shape the travelers’ sense of danger.
The Golem Encounter
In the gloom of the alley, the narrator sees a towering gray figure with a body described as coated in bronze-green patina, leaning on a knotted white staff. Its appearance is difficult to make out, and the narrator’s attention fixes on the indistinct globe above its shoulders, where an ibis-like face seems to emerge amid other imagined faces. The figure’s unusual form and the narrator’s uncertainty give the encounter its fearful, unstable character.
Dee identifies the apparition as the golem and raises his arms. He utters a sequence of names and a song title; the figure then dissolves, leaving a small pile of ashes. The episode provides no independent explanation of what the creature was or how Dee’s words affected it, preserving the encounter’s ambiguity even as its immediate threat disappears.
The Scroll and the Alley’s Significance
After the golem vanishes, Dee searches the ashes with his fingers and draws out a scroll, which he conceals in his clothing. The alley thus yields not only a frightening encounter but also a hidden document, linking the supernatural episode to the larger atmosphere of secret knowledge and rival interests surrounding the journey.
An old rabbi then emerges from the shadows and addresses Dee. Dee answers in a deliberately enigmatic manner, and the rabbi identifies himself as Rabbi Allevi. Their exchange shifts the scene from apparent confrontation toward a meeting, but the passage does not explain the scroll’s contents or the purpose of the encounter. Zlatá ulička functions as a threshold: a place where rumor, concealed knowledge, and the uncanny briefly converge without being fully resolved.
