Federal Security Service

Grey Bees

The Federal Security Service is the security agency referred to in the novel as the FSB. Its direct intervention in the evidence here is brief: it confiscates one of Sergey Sergeyich’s hives and later returns it. That episode has an afterlife in a dream, where the returned hive becomes the source of a procession of camouflage-clad bees heading toward his home in Little Starhorodivka. The agency is therefore present not through an account of its procedures, but through the disruption of Sergeyich’s beekeeping and the image that disruption leaves behind.

Seizure and Return

The account establishes that the FSB confiscated one hive and subsequently returned it. The surrounding material does not explain why it was taken, how long it was held, or what officials did with it. The agency’s action is conveyed through its concrete effect on Sergeyich’s apiary, rather than through a description of an encounter with its personnel.

The returned hive remains distinct from the rest of Sergeyich’s bees in the later dream: it stands apart in a field. The detail connects the organization’s earlier intervention to the book’s closing imagery without supplying an explanation for the seizure or treating the dream as a report of another real action by the FSB.

The Hive in Sergeyich’s Dream

After stopping to rest among sunflower fields, Sergeyich falls asleep and hears loud buzzing in a dream. He recognizes its source as the hive the FSB had confiscated and returned. A huge grey bee emerges, followed by more bees, all moving away from the hive in the direction of his house in Little Starhorodivka.

The dream transforms the hive’s administrative history into a troubling image: its inhabitants look grey because they wear military-style camouflage, and move together like scouts. The novel thus links the agency’s documented interference with one hive to Sergeyich’s dream of a militarized swarm, while keeping the dream’s meaning open rather than presenting its figures as literal FSB personnel.

Narrative Significance

The FSB’s role is limited but consequential in the available evidence. The seizure and return of a hive supplies the remembered object around which Sergeyich’s dream gathers; the agency’s intervention is carried forward as an image of bees leaving the hive and traveling toward the home he has left behind. The episode brings his work with living creatures into contact with the military realities of the novel, without turning the dream into evidence of a further agency operation.
