Novooleksiyivka

Grey Bees

Novooleksiyivka is a transit point in Sergey Sergeyich’s journey: at its station he releases Aisha as she boards the train to Lviv, then continues by road toward Melitopol. Its platforms and connecting roads frame a departure that leaves him alone and exhausted, with the practical demands of travel and the emotional cost of parting converging in one place.

The station and Aisha’s departure

A station announcement identifies the train as number eighty-six, running from Novooleksiyivka to Lviv and departing from platform one. Aisha looks at Sergeyich with the pain of someone being separated from family; he embraces her before he can think better of it. The conductor urges them not to delay, and Sergeyich lets Aisha go. The train disappears from sight, leaving him alone on the platform.

The departure does not bring clean relief. Sergeyich staggers as the carriages leave, as if he were aboard with Aisha, and feels bitterness and regret. He imagines that he has done something wrong or missed his own chance to take the train. The station thus marks not only Aisha’s onward passage but the separation between her movement toward Lviv and Sergeyich’s continued journey.

Road onward

After the station, Sergeyich drives along the road to Melitopol, which runs between fields. The sun strikes his eyes, while wind has already tired them; he squints and yawns rather than closing them to rest. His nearly sleepless night, early start, anxious wait at the Russian border, and repeated movement between buses and the Novooleksiyivka train station have accumulated into a crushing weariness. His hands tire on the wheel and his fingers grow numb.

When he flinches and glances back, he notices the bag on the back seat and realizes that Aisha left without eating. The small, concrete discovery carries the parting beyond the platform: even after the train is gone, his attention remains fixed on what she needed and what was left undone. Novooleksiyivka is therefore both a literal junction in the route and the setting of a lingering, unfinished goodbye.
