Clinging and Brightness (Lî)

I Ching

Clinging and Brightness (Lî), Hexagram XXX, brings together two related meanings: brightness and adherence. Its image is associated with fire and light, and by metaphor with intelligence; its practical teaching is that clarity must remain attached to what is correct. The hexagram therefore makes success a matter of both discernment and conduct, prescribing firmness without self-will and docility without loss of principle.

Meaning and Central Teaching

The hexagram’s judgment says that firm correctness brings free course and success, and adds that its subject should nourish a docility like that of a cow. The pairing matters: light signifies the capacity to see, while adherence describes the disciplined relation that keeps action aligned with what is right. The image does not treat intelligence as sufficient in itself. Its favorable outcome depends on intelligence being joined to humility and obedience to the correct course.

The commentary recognizes an interpretive uncertainty in the hexagram’s subject. If the whole figure is read as expressing it, the doubled brightness may signify the ruler. If the two central lines are taken as decisive, the subject appears instead as weakness dwelling between strength above and below. Either reading arrives at the same ethical demand: strict adherence to what is correct, combined with docile humility. The cow gives that humility a concrete emblem, chosen for its docile nature.

The Lines and Their Conditions

The first line depicts a person ready to move with confused steps, yet treading reverently; because care restrains the movement, there is no error. The commentary explains the tension through the line’s position at the bottom of the fire trigram, whose nature is to ascend. Its strength inclines it upward, and could make the movement coarse or vehement, but it has scarcely entered into the figure’s action. That early position checks the impulse and makes reverence possible.

The second line presents its subject in yellow, with great good fortune. The commentary’s account of the whole hexagram gives particular weight to the central lines and to the relation between position and line quality; here, however, the supplied text states the favorable image without extending its explanation. The judgment’s broader emphasis on adherence and docility provides the frame for reading the line, but does not remove that limit in the commentary.

At the top of the figure, the sixth line changes the scale from personal conduct to public authority. The ruler employs its subject on punitive expeditions; the subject achieves admirable merit by breaking only the chiefs of the rebels and refrains from punishing prisoners who were not their associates. The line ends without error. Its commentary attributes this result to the subject’s intelligence and proper vigor, while stressing that generous consideration is as conspicuous as achievement. Brightness here is expressed not simply as successful force, but as the capacity to distinguish responsibility and restrain punishment.

Brightness, Adherence, and Political Conduct

The final line’s treatment of punitive action gives the hexagram’s paired meanings a political consequence. The ruler’s commission authorizes action, but the account limits that action: only the rebel chiefs are broken, and those not associated with them are not punished. The commentary presents discernment and generosity together, making restraint part of the success rather than an afterthought. Authority is most rightly exercised when it can identify the responsible parties and avoid extending punishment beyond them.

The hexagram’s interpretation also illustrates how its symbols do not yield a single simple meaning in isolation. Fire and light suggest brightness and intelligence; adherence adds the requirement that perception remain attached to right conduct. The commentary moves between the whole figure, the central lines, and the qualities of particular positions, acknowledging that the identity of the subject is difficult to settle even while its ethical direction remains clear. Its governing lesson is thus not that every ambiguity disappears, but that alternative readings converge on the need for correctness, humility, and measured action.
