GHB

Impure Blood

GHB is both a disputed substance and a material link between Manou and Emil Florian. What Manou first describes as bodybuilding equipment becomes evidence of Florian’s abuse of boys: police connect the GHB found in a canister at Manou’s apartment to the substance Florian carried in a water bottle, and Manou eventually says Florian stole it from him. The substance therefore turns an apparently private claim about training into a question of access, knowledge, and responsibility.

Discovery and Interrogation

Police confront Manou with a key found under Florian’s prayer mat and ask him to explain the GHB in the canister at his apartment. Bonbon says the laboratory will establish that the substance is GHB; Agnès privately recognizes that the result will not be available until the following day, since the laboratory workers have already gone home. Manou nevertheless stops resisting and admits that the material is GHB, or close enough.

The admission does not settle what the substance was for. Manou claims he uses it only for bodybuilding, and Bonbon challenges the explanation by calling GHB a date-rape drug and asking what use it could have in bodybuilding. Manou counters that it was developed for bodybuilders, and that its effects depend on dosage. His argument makes the same substance serve two competing accounts: a training aid in his version, and a means of incapacitating victims in the investigators’ account.

The Claimed Bodybuilding Use

Later, Darac asks Manou what he takes. Manou lists GHB alongside steroids and caffeine tablets, adding that he takes nothing else. When Darac asks whether it is all for bodybuilding, the exchange returns to the explanation Manou has offered from the outset. The repeated claim does not erase the police’s suspicions; instead, it places GHB in a broader set of substances Manou says he uses for training while leaving its other possible use under investigation.

Manou’s explanation is further tested against the physical evidence. The canister containing the substance was found in his apartment, while a GHB supply was associated with Florian’s water bottle. Agnès tells Manou that the laboratory will establish that the two are the same. The comparison matters because it moves the inquiry beyond Manou’s account of his own use: the substance potentially links his stored supply to the material Florian carried.

The Alleged Method

Darac proposes a detailed account of how Manou and Florian might have used GHB around boys. He suggests that Manou could join young people playing football or skateboarding, gain their confidence, and wait until a chosen boy was ready to leave. In this reconstruction, Florian would arrive with the GHB water so that Manou did not have to carry it himself. Darac then proposes that Manou could approach Florian with the boy and arrange for the boy to receive the drugged drink.

This account remains an interrogation theory, not a fully established description of an individual incident. Manou rejects it repeatedly and grows visibly agitated as Darac continues, denying that it happened. The evidence presents the alleged role of GHB through the confrontation between Darac’s reconstruction and Manou’s denial, rather than through an independently narrated assault scene.

Confession and Responsibility

After Manou dries his eyes, he gives a different account of how Florian obtained the GHB. He says Florian was sexually interested in young boys, had watched videos, and wanted access to real victims, but was too afraid to act at first. According to Manou, Florian learned about GHB and knew that Manou used it. Florian expected Manou to participate or at least provide some of the substance; Manou says he refused both requests and warned Florian that their relationship would end if he proceeded.

Manou then says Florian stole some GHB and mixed up Manou’s containers when Manou was not looking. He insists that he did not help Florian and was not an accessory to anything Florian did. His account acknowledges that the substance in his possession could be used for abuse while distinguishing possession and use for bodybuilding from knowingly supplying it to Florian. The distinction is central to the investigation’s moral and evidentiary question: whether GHB’s presence connects Manou to Florian’s crimes as a participant, or whether Florian’s alleged theft explains the connection.

Evidentiary and Narrative Significance

GHB’s importance develops through a sequence of competing meanings. The substance is first identified in a container at Manou’s home, then admitted to by Manou as something he uses for bodybuilding, and finally connected by investigators to the GHB in Florian’s water bottle. Manou’s later account supplies a proposed chain of transfer—Florian stole it—while denying that Manou knowingly enabled its use against boys.

The drug is not merely an object discussed in the interrogation: its location, alleged similarity across two supplies, and disputed ownership shape what the police can infer about the men’s relationship and responsibility. Yet the evidence preserves an important distinction between the investigators’ proposed method and Manou’s eventual explanation. GHB links the inquiry’s evidence, but it does not by itself resolve whether Manou assisted Florian or whether Florian took the substance without his consent.
