“One groove’s difference”
Inherent Vice“One groove’s difference” is Bigfoot Bjornsen’s image for the small divergence that can turn recurrence into change. Spoken after he recounts how Mickey Wolfmann was taken to Ojai and apparently returned to his former acquisitive ways, the comparison leaves open whether the cycle has truly repeated or whether its next turn may lead somewhere else.
The Record and the Reversal
Bigfoot first describes a chain of forces that seems to have closed around Mickey: Mickey stumbled upon something he should not have seen; men in John Wayne costumes panicked and hustled him away; federal agents learned that an acid-using billionaire intended to give away his money and imposed their own plans. Bigfoot says their connection to the Golden Fang through heroin activity in the Far East led to Mickey being programmed in Ojai. He then judges the intervention successful: Mickey seems to have resumed his old greedy ways.
That apparent return makes Bigfoot’s later qualification matter. He concedes that the outcome may not be settled, proposing that what goes around can come around without ending in exactly the same place. The record supplies the mechanism of the image: a turntable repeats a groove, but a shift of one groove carries the needle into another song. Recurrence is real, yet exact repetition is not inevitable.
Meaning in Context
The expression holds two readings in tension. Its circular motion fits the apparent restoration of Mickey’s earlier greed after an attempted break with the System; its slight misalignment keeps open the possibility that the return is not a perfect restoration. Bigfoot does not claim that Mickey has changed again or specify what the difference will produce. Instead, the image revises his certainty: the story may resemble its earlier pattern while still diverging at a crucial point.
The record metaphor also gives Bigfoot’s reflection a deliberately modest scale. A whole universe can be redirected by something as small as one groove’s difference, but the line identifies no force that guarantees such a turn. Its significance lies in the gap between a cycle that looks closed and a future that remains capable of variation.
