Doc's shootout with Puck and Adrian

Inherent Vice

Doc's shootout with Puck and Adrian turns an attempted drugging and confinement into a violent escape, then leaves Doc walking away from a street where Adrian appears dead. The episode shifts Doc from captive to armed survivor, but its apparent resolution offers little relief: he expects legal trouble and treats the consequences with a detached uncertainty, before Bigfoot arrives.

Captivity and Escape

Puck leaves Doc handcuffed in a locked room after promising to fetch heroin, having noticed that Doc’s gun is missing. The threat is not merely confinement: Puck frames the drug as a way to remove Doc permanently, and Doc recognizes too late the danger behind Puck’s familiar, easy manner. With his pen and handgun already taken, Doc relies on plastic shims cut from an expired charge card Shasta had left behind. After strenuous effort he frees himself, but the room offers no ordinary exit. He unscrews the overhead bulb to darken it, then experiences a disorienting flashback in which cartoon figures appear as spirit guides and resistance to authority seems to belong to an ancient martial tradition. The episode briefly converts helplessness into a precarious tactical advantage: when Puck returns, Doc uses a loose handcuff to overpower him and escape the room.

Gunfire, Apparent Death, and the Aftermath

After leaving the room, Doc uses the sound of the surf to find his way toward what he hopes is the street, but Adrian is waiting in the hallway with a pistol. Doc dodges the shot, which strikes a large Vietnamese nipple gong, then retreats through an indoor patio into a room overlooking the ocean. He hides behind a couch and throws one of his huaraches to draw Adrian’s fire. When a moving shadow gives away Adrian’s position, Doc fires and the shooting stops. He waits before calling out; Adrian answers from the darkness, though he sounds unwell.

Adrian’s accusation that Doc has hurt Puck turns the exchange into a face-off. Doc warns that Adrian will have to expose himself to get a shot, while promising to shoot as soon as he sees him. Sirens grow louder, and Doc says that he has called an ambulance. Adrian thanks him, then falls face-first into the street and appears not to be moving. Doc judges him dead, while recognizing that he may have killed two people and could face months or years of trouble. Even so, he feels detached from the scene and walks up Gummo Marx Way rather than staying beside Adrian’s body.

The ending does not confirm what follows legally or whether Doc is pursued. An ambulance and police cars arrive at Adrian’s house, and Doc assumes they will speak with Bigfoot. As Doc continues walking, Bigfoot pulls up beside him and asks whether he is coming. The invitation leaves the immediate danger behind without resolving the consequences of the confrontation.
