Einar

Inherent Vice

Einar is Puck Beaverton’s associate from prison and the precise-handed operator behind their slot-machine scheme. His skill makes him briefly vanish into the casino’s machinery of chance; his later appearance as Puck’s best man gives the partnership an unexpectedly comic coda.

Identity and Introduction

Trillium Fortnight identifies Einar as an associate of Puck’s whom Puck met in the penitentiary. In her collection of photographs, he repeatedly appears squeezed between Puck and Trillium, his close-set eyes and lifted upper lip giving him a visibly discontented look. The photographs place him alongside the couple at the beach, at outdoor gatherings, and playing volleyball, while his connection to Puck extends beyond those social scenes into their criminal work.

The Slot-Machine Partnership

A casino acquaintance describes Puck and Einar as slot hustlers, though not close friends. Einar’s unusual sensitivity in his hands allows him to feel the movement of the machine’s levers and determine the precise point at which each reel releases. He can adjust the spin so that the symbol he wants stops at the payline. The account emphasizes that this is practiced mechanical skill: the acquaintance has watched him do it.

Their roles are complementary. When casino security notices Einar and he can no longer collect his winnings, Puck waits nearby, pretending to play a nickel machine. Einar triggers the jackpot and slips away; Puck then steps over to claim the payout. The scheme depends on separating the person who manipulates the machine from the person who collects the money.

The Casino Escape

Doc Sportello recognizes Puck’s swastika tattoo and realizes that the player working another machine must be Einar. Before Doc can approach, Einar’s machine erupts in a noisy jackpot, sending a heap of Kennedy half-dollars onto the carpet. Einar nods and disappears, just as the arrangement requires.

This time, however, Puck’s decoy nickel machine also hits. A casino delegation arrives to certify both winners, but Einar is already gone, leaving Puck caught between two jackpots and the personnel converging on him. Rather than choose a machine or explain the situation, Puck bolts for the nearest exit. Einar’s escape succeeds, while the partnership’s usual division of labor collapses into a comic trap for his accomplice.

Marriage and Narrative Role

After a night of partying, Puck and Trillium obtain a marriage license at the county courthouse and marry at the Wee Kirk O’ the Heather. Einar acts as best man. He then decides to elope with another groom-to-be whose intended bride has become absent through cold feet; on discovering that his own prospective bride is also unwilling, he is relieved. The episode turns the casino partnership into a fleeting wedding-day alliance: Einar remains beside Puck, but the ceremony also sends him toward a separate, abruptly abandoned marriage.

Einar’s appearances are brief, yet they connect the book’s social and criminal registers. In the photographs he is an awkward third presence beside a couple; at the casino he is the hidden technician whose touch exploits the machine; at the wedding he becomes best man and fellow runaway groom. His story is defined less by an independent quest than by these shifts in proximity to Puck, from prison acquaintance and partner to accomplice in flight and witness to marriage.
