A Farewell Gift

Eddie’s Signature A friend’s send-off As Michael leaves with his family, Eddie throws him a soccer ball and signs his name across it. The gift carries the Mudlarks’ friendship onto a voyage that takes Michael away from his familiar neighborhood. A portable connection Michael keeps the ball close even when storms and homesickness make the sea frightening. It connects the child aboard the yacht to the friend he has left behind.

The Ball in the Dark Sea

A Talisman Becomes a Lifeline Lost in the night Michael carries the ball forward while trying to bring Stella away from the yacht’s bow. It slips overboard before he does, disappearing into the darkness. Buoyancy and survival After Michael falls, the ball becomes something he can cling to. He recognizes it in the water, grips it through the night, and survives long enough to reach the island.

The Ball Returned

A Lost Piece of Home Hidden in the outrigger Kensuke reveals Michael’s weathered ball inside his concealed outrigger. He explains that he found Michael and Stella in the sea and brought the ball back with them. Memory made tangible The ball reconnects Michael to his earlier life and confirms how close he came to dying. Kensuke’s return of it expresses care that neither of them can yet easily put into words.
